Relay Setup vs Fugi HD lens for Filmout

Which is better if you're planning a filmout, The letus B4 Relay/Ultimate setup or the Fujinon HD lens?

Depends upon the look you want--sharpest possible with deep depth of field or a cinematic selective focus, but slightly softer. If the idea of doing a film out is to duplicate the look of a 35mm movie, then the 35mm adapter is closest to that ideal.

If you're at NAB, stop by Cinevate's booth C8742 Our multi-format (full SLR or cine frame) zoomable relay and Brevis MP.2 will be there attached to our HPX500. The image we're getting from this setup is simply stunning. We'll likely shoot some footage right at NAB and post it up. Because the relay is purpose designed to work with our adapter, edge to edge sharpness, resolution and chromatic aberation properties are outstanding. Light efficiency is a bit of a surprise also as we're stopping the unit down to f4 to get correct exposure in typical indoor lighting.

Also featured on this rig will be the exclusive world debut of a very cool item that Zeiss was kind enough to offer to us for the NAB show.

Dino,

Is it really going to only be slightly softer for a film out, or will there be a noticable difference?

Depends on the 35mm adapter, some are sharper than others, some have better edge to edge than others, some allow stopping down more than others, which usually makes the taking lens look sharper, have more contrast, better edge to edge.

By it's very nature, selective focus can give the perception of a softer image than a deep depth of field scene. You need to do some testing, as these are aesthetic, subjective questions. I like turning detail off when I shoot filmic images, but I would never send a camera out on rental that way to a client unless requested. Many people think of HD as the sports/reality show look, not 35mm film.
