Relationships/shared interests - lemme hear your thoughts

So there is occasionally some deep water in some of these threads so I figured I would start another one about things I wonder about and see what kind of feedback comes up. Obviously in relationships, shared interests are important, but where do you feel the line is with that, as far as the people reading this, if you have significant others, do they share your passion for film/technology/art/acting/photography whatever it may be? Do you wish they did? Or do you prefer some separation in those things.

Personally, I have never really dated anyone that was as excited about the things that excited me at the time, and in the back of my head I have often thought how nice it would be for someone to understand why I was excited about an amazing camera shot in a movie, or a new camera or not think I was insane for building a spaceship in my living room (that's probably asking alot!).

But maybe that is not a realistic thing to want, especially since interests change over time, I was not as into film and filmmaking 5 years ago like I am now so expecting someone to keep the same interests probably isn't fair to anyone.

So...tell me what's important.

I don't think it's necessary to share interests, as long as you respect each other's interests. My wife and I met in film school and have similar taste in films and TV, but there are things I love she hates and vice versa. And there's a whole bunch on non film related stuff she's into that I don't have a clue about. What's important is that you are interested in each other...Now, a side discussion on this would be in regards to working together. My wife and I have a hard time working on each other's projects because filmmaking is high stress, and when you have a close relationship without emotional boundaries professional decorum sometimes goes out the window. Feelings are more easily hurt. It's tricky and we've learned to stay away from it.

My wife and I share a number of interests, and each have some that the other finds yawnful.

If you have zero interests in common with someone with whom you spend a lot of time, that could be problematic.

I love shared interests with my wife but there's some things i have that are my own. Filmmaking for one. She doesn't bother me and come on set cause i know she'd be bored and ask when are we done. (she just texts me "how long till your done") but if she were there entertaining her would become like more important then shooting and working. So there's something we both do by ourselves. Like Batutta said working together is hard. We don't push that one.

i'm a rather simple man, so she only needs to share 3 interests with me.

1. making love
2. making me a sandwich
3. handing me the remote

Well, first of all if she can drink more than me, she's out the door.

My last female friend was a jazz player, so we hit it right off the bat. It's just so easy to have a mutual conversation with someone who already understands and who's lifes path is paralleling yours at that time. It cuts through all of that 'what do you do?' crap.
And you have so much to talk about.

Apart from that, stangers with no connection? I don't even know where to start with that.
So I don't even worry about it. It goes where it goes.

Good luck people.

Met my wife for the first time at a Starbucks - I was reading Idries Shah's 'The Sufis' and she was interested in Sufi philosophy so that common interest kind of drew her to my table...

Took her skydiving and she was first out the door - turned out we had a common interest, there.

Took her to the range and she (like all women I have dated) turned out to be a natural talent with a handgun (took her six-in the center-ring-plus-one-flyer target to work and hung it over her desk, after which her co-workers were properly respectful...) so that turned out to be a common interest too...

She likes riding pillion on my motorcycle and has been muttering about getting one of her own, so that's another one...

...plus history, architecture, visual arts, cooking, gardening, chess, etc etc etc...

...common interests definitely help.
