as my skills improve my need for a better tripod becomes clearer. my tripod sucks. I shoot with the HVX200 and my tripod sucks. I nneed control and precision. I need a tripod that will stop moving when I stop moving. Tight and stable and heavy.

I realize i could spend thousands but can I do something for like, $900 out the door?

Unlikely. Cartoni Focus is pretty good for just above $1k. Sachtler is much better - I have the DV6SB and find it is very very smooth including diagonal pans. Head is about $1800.

I would not suggest anything from Bogen/Manfroto if you are looking for precision.

The Sachtlers have always treated me right. But for that budget you may want to check out the Libec LS-38

iv been using a 503 hapily for 3 years now but I like the 516 better. (bogen that is)

I certainly thought Bogen was adequate. Then I was able to play with Miller and Sachtler. Will a Bogen hold the camera up? Sure. Will it get the job done? Absolutely. Is it a superior design to other manufacturers? Not so much.

If it does what you need it to - great. But I would certainly recommend other companies beforehand.
