Regular vs hi-def video projectors

I have a fairly old video projector that can project a 1280x720 Quicktime movie from my laptop through XGA-out (or DVI) at what appears to be full resolution. Why is that not considered hi-def, and what is the difference between this and what I would see with a hi-def projector?

If the laptop is designed for standard def projection, it's not projecting it at full resolution. If it seems fine to you, then stick with it. However, an HD projector should be noticeably sharper when projecting on a larger area.
