Como's back. back again
i wanna get one, but i dont wana spend 100 bucks.....well i guess i cud find one for cheaper, so i tried a d.i.y....grabbed a thin white piece of ply wood, and it didnt do diddly CARP! (referring to andrew kramers vid tutorials)

i guess the surface needs to be shiny? anything i can buy, or at home i can use? thanks

Get a sheet of styrofoam insulation from Home Depot or Lowe's. It's thick foam, silver on one side and white on the other.

Or get a sheet of white foam core from an art supply store (or OfficeMax/Office Depot) and glue some aluminum foil (shiny side out) to one side.

Or pick up a used 5-in-1 PhotoFlex off ebay; that'll give you translucent, white, silver, gold, and silver/gold.

....

If you go this route you can cut it into different sizes and run two inch gaffers or duct tape around the edges to keep it from starting to crumble.

Crumpling gives a better look in most cases. Straight aluminum foil would give a mirror-like performance, so you'd get a small hotspot of extremely bright sunlight on your subject. Crumpling and then un-crumpling helps diffuse it out and gives a broader/softer light which is usually a lot more useful.

I think someone mentioned using a dull silver lame material on foam core too. But really a used one on Ebay couldn't be so expensive and the way they fold up into the nice neat package is indispensable for travel. Crumpling the foil duplicates the hammered aluminum type reflector approach which gives more diffused output.

get one from ebay. I got new one from a seller in hongkong=20$ with shipping. The zipper is filmsy but otherwise its good. Its the 5 colors 42 inch foldable one. Very similar to the 120$one at my local photo shop.

The 5 in 1 reflector kits from AMVONA on ebay are the king of the good deals.

I got one that is 40 X 60 inches for 20 dollars plus shipping of 16.74.

It is great and I get compliments all the time about how great it is. All my friends have bought them from Ebay / amvona.

Search for "5 in 1 reflector oval".

You will love it.
