Reel Music

I am putting together my first reel and I have been watching a lot of other reels in preparation.

In almost 90% of the reels I have seen, they are cut to music that they don't have the license for.

I realize that it is a big no no to put copyrighted music in your movies (without permission), but is it cool to do this with a reel since a reel is not sold?

What do you think?

Good post Chris! I've been thinking about this myself as well. A local post house uses a Crystal Method song in their reel online and I for some reason I don't think they coughed up the money for a license.

I would think it's ok because it's for exhibition purposes only.

I'm rebuilding my reel at the moment, and have pondered this. I don't have a straight answer, but I've decided to stay with the "better safe than sorry" method. For what it's worth....

For some reason Im thinking that this is like some unspoken exception to the rules. Everyone and their bald-headed granny does it.

Many of us don't have the rights to the images placed on our reels either... I think its a bit of the industry turning a blind eye to it own worker pool.

It would seem that reels don't adhere to the music royalty laws.

I know I didn't bother. Considering the audience for these things and the amount of exposure a reel gets I don't think there is much to worry about.

Perhaps if you were a huge corporation with deep pockets the record company whould sick it's goons on you but other wise I'm confident you'll be okay.

How's the reel looking anyway, chris? I'm anxious to take a peek.

It's odd how in this one instance almost everyone is doing it and no one seems to care. I guess I will too.

Now, I just have to pick a track to cut it to.

I have just begun to think about and select potential tracks. I probably won't have anything for at least a month.

You can be sure, I will post here once I do though. :)
