reel boundries

How far is too far for a new production company to go when showing their work on a reel? Can they show work produced by a director/producer/DP/animator they are planning on working with, but haven't yet? Can they show work they had freelancers do? Should they credit collaboraters at the end of the reel?

I'm trying to be vague here because I don't want to name names, but I'd really love to hear what everyone thinks.

If you show anyones work without their consent you're crossing the line. Even if they agree to partner with your company you may not be able to show their work. For example: if a director did work for Music City Productions and they allowed him to use the work on his reel it doesn't give you the right to show the work. The work for Music City was "work for hire" the footage is owned by Music City or their client. Unless the work is the sole property of the director/producer/DP/animator the situation could get ugly very quickly.
my 2 cents
