redundent.... redundent

What is with the huge influx of the same damn questions all the time....

"should I shoot 24pA.. or 24p.... or which is better... "

"What settings should I use..."

holy **** man... are people so brain dead they can't read or try things for themselves..

We should have a new thread category... "Stupid User Questions"..

It would appear I am not the only person losing interest in these forums more everyday... but this is a little bit ridiculous... it appears none of the "new" users can use the search function..

at least with the old site we had an excuse.. it would take several days to return a search... and searching sucked balls.. but now it is damn near instantaneous...

maybe I am just jaded and annoyed.. but wouldn't it be a novel concept for people to actually try things themselves before posting the same damn questions over and over again..

and for the love of god... don't ask somebody else what they think your settings should be for YOUR look... I have an idea.. experiment.

I am just in an angry mood today.

bah humbug.

Yeah people not searching is crazy...... By the way' what' is the difference

There there....

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I think this is like a phase. Many of the users who've been here for ages are moving on, or better, working, and now people who are new to the dvx are taking their place.

But maybe I'm just being optimistic.

You know though, I never used the search when the site was the old style, and I never found the need to ask what settings I should use.

Welcome to the club Loki.

It's the "I want" attitude.

It's never "I tried these seven things but it won't work".

The general attitude around here is around kindergarden level.......gimme.

Perhaps the site is undergoing the growing pains incurred through it's own successes. While I know that not every newbie's MO includes doing a lot of searches and asking questions that "push the envelope," I think the quality of this forum/community is one of the really unique things about the DVX. I am sure there are some creative ways to embrace a surging interest and reduce "redundant" posts.

One idea is to have moderators lead every forum with a stickies containing links to threads on common topics. Another idea could be to limit posts for a member's 1st month, a trial period per se. Maybe the registration page could include a few suggestions concerning DVXUser etiquette.

Think Loki's feelings are more than the result of "all the really smart people are too busy to post recently" and definately think the issues raised should be addressed.

maybe a generic outline e-mail with a complete ban on posting for the first 30day's of membership?.... or a little thing that pop's up each time you click on the start new thread saying ( before submiting a new thread have you used the search function to see if you question has be discussed already?) I don't know how hard that would be....

Which setting do I use to go from 24 to 60?...Hours in a day that is! I hate living life at 24 hours per day, I'd much rather change the settings to 60. I find life is hard to edit at 24, one hour is not enough to do this and how do you accomplish anything in a half hour? I desperately need to shoot my life at a higher hour rate!....HELP!

What a cool idea! Is the pop-up thing possible Barry S.?

I think someone has mentioned this before and it's easier said than done due to time constraints on everyone but a consolidation of FAQs across the board could be narrowed into articles...

"DOF Tricks"
"Settings and Why/When"
"PAL vs. NTSC"
"Shutter Speeds"
“What’s that clunking sound?”
yada, yada, yada.

Then, a "Please start here link" for new users pointing to the section that Jarred just setup ("Articles"). And/Or when someone drops a question that has been asked quite a bit just point them to the article and close the topic.

Sounds great but there's obviously time involved in this. I would certainly volunteer to write one (or several) and the have the mods edit it.

I have an ulterior motive; I don’t want any of the old schoolers leaving the board for future critics of my actual work so anything to streamline this board is valuable to me

Whatever happened to simple manners?

Look for the answers to your question yourself with a search?
Apparently something beyond the abilities of people?

Please, enough with the "idea's" for how to "help" the lazy.

It's simply called maturity.

The problem I see with that is: Just because someone has recently joined DVXuser doesn't mean that they are inexperienced in the world of production.

What if someone with lots of talent and experience joins... will they have to wait 30 days to contribute?

I agree that locking someone out for 30 days is too restrictive. Also, as Pookie might expect, people may not suddenly develop manners in that time period. I am a bit of a newbie myself, so far be it for me to start suggesting all kinds of rules. But do think this site would benefit in finding a way to handle the surge of interest.

On a side note, bet one new submission of a nature film by Disjecta and everyone would forget any gripes about lame posts. Just wanted to mention, his short films really rock.

Just leave it the way it is. I actually don't mind repeat offenders. I actually take advantage of it, post the answer and then highjack the crap out of that thread.

I did search the whole site and got answers, which is why this site is so great. I also tried every import setting and what i came out with was interlaced frames. I wanted to know if this was normal. I didnt know it was offending anyone to try to figure this out on the best forum I know of. why do you read questions you dont want to answer or that bum you out. maybe try not to let it get to you. Reminds me of a song"our little group has always been and always will until the end o-well whatever nevermind".

It' is just a lazy thing, people think it would be quicker to post a question. like it was said at the start " maybe when the search was slow" but its not; it's super fast..... I don't think denying posts for 30 day's is a big deal, you would still have full function of the board and it would give you the time to spend learning how this forum works and what it already has stored in threads.... I didn't post anything for at least 30day's after joining and probably a lot longer than that.... maybe i'm living in the fast lane but 30 day's isn't very long and goes by in no time.....

ps. where the hell is disjecta?

Just like changing the channel or walking out of the theater, the old guard has the ability to ignore irritating or rude posts by newbie members. It might well catalyze their creativity and resourcefullness in the end to let them come back to a blank screen when they ask something without first doing a little research first.

That said, the recent attitude by some in the platinum set is disheartening. I used to spend a lot of time and contribute on a Land Rover board, fielding questions from younger guys until I was blue in the face. Contemporaries started feeling the same frustrations I'm seeing here, and took the cynical, litigious and angry route I've started to see here. If you don't like people asking questions, please just ignore them or leave. Don't bring this incredible site down with your disenchantment.

My observation isn't that this board has become boring, irrelevant or redundant - it has started to get mean though.

$.02 IMHO FWIW

:undecided

When I first came to this site over a year ago, I was a definite newbie, filled with hundreds of beginner questions.

With the help of many members here I learned so much. I was able to to form a production company and I filmed 3 short films and I am now in pre-production on my first feature film.

I had read countless books and gone to dozens of websites, but I never found any place as helpful as DVXUser.

In return, I try to answer the questions of "the new newbies" and pass on the knowledge that was given to me.

I guess my point is, I hope the "Platinum Members" don't get too jaded. I hope they realize that there are people out there that they have had a significant positive influence on.

I know I am forever indebted to their generosity.

Chris

why not have new users pass a quiz in order to become registered? set it up so all the answers can be found in the included OPERATOR'S MANUAL. Duh. It's the fast food society and attitude we're seeing at work here. Someone's got $3K and 10 minutes to become a pro. Doesn't work like that. I don't think I've ever asked a question on this site, because all the answers are already here, in triplicate.

Perhaps CMessino is right, we're seeing a changing of the guard. Folks like myself should be fielding newbie questions with answers like "Please search before posting a question" or doing a search ourselves and providing them with a link. Maybe they're just no good at coming up with search terms?

So the big guns won't have to feel anxious about the newbie questions anymore, and those Platinum members could maybe help the community grow with more advanced discussions in the Business, Writing, Cinematography and Directing sections. After all, those are the skills really needed if you want to do more than just become an expert at the DVX's functions, right? Those are the sections that are really at the heart of the matter, are they not?

I for one will never tire of making up fun answers to the "clunking sound" questions... I had that one guy sitting in a dark closet for 30 minutes with his dvx once to "reset" it. hahahaha
