redundant question about pulldown.

I thought I had gotten this down but it's been bothering me.

I capture on FCP with advanced pulldown 2:3:3:2 removal and edit on 23.98 timeline- the usual.

recently I seem to have realized that I notice more stutter in pulldown removed footage and thus coming to a realization that unless it's on film, the pulldown actually contributes to NTSC video to aid in the film-look.
I've been told that I should always shoot advanced and remove pulldown and edit.. so I can edit true 24p plus even if I dont get it on film, going back to mini-dv, or DVD will put the pulldown back automatically. does it? because it didn't seem to me like it did. Rather it keeps the deinterlaced look which has a stuttery look and feel to it.

So if i'm right, and wanted to not remove pulldown, should I simply capture normally?
Can I edit true 24p if I dont remove pulldown?

thank you.

You can capture 24p with F5 or 24pa with F6 modes.
If you don't have a explicit need to create a pure 24fps end product (i.e. film or 24fps DVD) then just shoot in F5 mode (24p) and edit in a 29.97 timeline. The original footage was shot at 24fps and is converted in the camera to have pulldown. Exact same thing as a film that is transferred to video.

If you wish to go to film or 24fps DVD then 24pa (F6) will provide slightly better quality (since frames don't have to be de-interlaced and re-compressed). 24pa also allows you to do pulldown removal on the fly which is faster and simpler than going through Cinema Tools.

Note that the look will be the same in either case. 24fps means that you have to watch strobing more than traditional video. Some of the stutter you see may be because you're not playing the video back with 2:3 pulldown added. Check your FCP playback prefs. it can also be a problem if your computer isn't fast enough to do this.

FCP will print to video with pulldown added (as noted above)
DVD Studio Pro will deal with 24fps footage correct if exported out of FCP into Compressor/DVD Studio.

and I just found out by printing to video that my machine isn't fast enough to perform 2:3:2:3 pulldown. ....

i need a G5

A G5 is not needed- anything above 1Ghz G4 with ample RAM is usually able to do it.

Noah, any chance we could get you to write up a FAQ for how to work with 24p footage in FCP? I seem to remember you did something on another board (maybe 2-pop) but we sure get a lot of questions from people with FCP who are having problems with 24p and 24pa material...

It's not that tough in FCP:

Pure 24fps:
Shoot 24PA (F6 mode)
In FCP: Easy Setup -> Click on Show All check box on upper right.
Select DV - NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal popup.

Non-Pure 24fps (24fps images in normal video (i.e. non-film )
Shoot 24p (F5 mode)
In FCP:
Easy Setup -> Select DV - NTSC

thanks Scott and Noah for your answers. I see now even after visiting Squire site, that my problem exists only in what I see outputted through print to tape or play back from the timeline to my TV screen: I do not see pulldown added back- and as Noah noted, my 800mhz Mac just isntt fast enough to add it back and that was wholly what it was.
So unless, I was just going out to DVD only, and wasn't planning to get a faster Mac anytime soon, I should stop shooting in 24pA and just go 24p and edit and capture as regular NTSC DV 29.97 if I want pulldown back on my finals.
does that sound about right?
