Reduced quality?

Any time I "capture video" through Vegas and I preview the file through "my computer" instead of Vegas itself, it looks as sharp and clean as it should be. But any time I do a "preview file" or do the "render as" to complete the video, it's like the quality is reduced by 25% or more.

What am I doing wrong?

If the final is not very good it's because you use the wrong project settings template. Always make sure you have opened the File/Project-Settings and choose there the right template that represents your footage. At the end, export at the same resolution and frame rate.

Well, that works. Wow, I am an idiot.

Okay, after I did that and rendered a 2 minute and 30 second video, it came out to 12 gigabytes. How can I reduce the size while keeping it high quality?

That's because you rendered uncompressed. Vegas' avi is not DivX (which is probably what you had in mind), but it's intermediate archiving/editing codecs, not "viewing" codecs.

Export as Sony AVC or WMV.

Why is it that when I am rendering it, it's coming out as a strange colours.... When I do a "preview" it's fine, but the colours are all messed up when I render it...

You should be able to render to any codec/frame size/quality setting from any project settings (though between 16:9 and 4:3, your graphics might get messed up in terms of where they appear in the frame) -- the difference the project settings make is what the "default" will be in the render settings.

If you customize your settings each time you render, or use an appropriate template (like NTSC or PAL DV, e.g.), you should be seeing the quality you expect. The render quality should be agnostic to the project settings.

What are your render settings? Can you post an example of your "messed up colors," and the good colors in the preview? (Are you using 32-bit color?)

I deleted the file before I could grab an example. I changed the render properties to "HDV 1080-50i (1440x1080, 25.000 fps)" and the template as "HDV 1080-50i intermediate." This is what gave me the wacky colours...

Okay, I tried it again and the colours weren't all goofed up. This time though, it rendered all of it to 2 gigs. It still looks like **** though... the quality looked completely reduced.... This is getting frustrating....

What's "reduced" about it?

Can post an example of what it looked like before the render and what it looked like after?

Also, post your exact settings when you render -- every video line item.
