I believe Nathan Beaman shoots most of his work with Redrock + Zeiss combinations and now has a Flip Unit that he uses. Head on over to RR Forums for more details.
The combination (M2+Flip+Zeiss) probably looks really nice.
what was your overall impression of the lesnes. We're looking to shoot a feature for low budget. As a DP would it be a better investment to go w/ Cannon or Nikkon than the Zeiss package offered by Redrock?
Ideally i think investing into the zeiss lenses is a better idea (if you buy new) because of the resale value.
Used Zeiss/Contax lenses hold their value very well and are solidly built so they would be a good investment. I'm sure the new ZF lenses are excellent as well but the C/Y lenses are cheaper, focus the "right" direction, and sport a much wider range of focal lengths including zooms. In my book they represent a much better value.
They were discontinued 20 years ago, back when stuff was made to last, so all my FD lenses are all aluminium, very nice glass, and because they were so expensive when they were new, the photographer has looked after them. All my lenses look like they came out of the factory two weeks ago, and they were very very cheap.
All lenses are in new condition, you wouldnt know how old they were if you didnt know. They are all the newer type breechlock mount, and they are so well built and the image is so clean, I cant really see why you would go with any other mount for the price you pay... You pay less but get a lot more
Ive shot a feature, two TV adverts, and a bunch of shorts with FD lenses and my SGpro and I have used nikon lenses and I thought they were pretty tacky in comparision to the retro canon lenses...
I jumped at the new ziess zf even though i had very beautiful collection of canon fD's because the name ziess where i come from gives you a lot of street cred.rogar-Shock(DBG): as a "professional lens" but honestly the image quality is not so radically different .
One of the main advantages of the nikon vs canon is that when you dial an fstop on the nikon the aperture blades respond in sync everytime.
with the FD's you can invest in a great tele or a fun shift and tilt lens and achieve a lot of cool DOF effects which are more controlled than the over the top lensbabies.
