Redrock MicroX

I just got the Redrock MicroX the other day, and I'm loving it! No more struggling with the inverted image, since I can't afford a monitor yet... The light loss is very minimal as the reviews have stated, I don't know an exact figure, but it's so low that it is definitly worth the buy. And the hard mount kit it comes with is a plus as well. Not to mention I think it's one of the nicer looking units. All in all it was well worth purchasing.

Here's a pic of my setup:

I'm trying to get reviews on the MicroX so could you give us a review on it ?(after you figure out stuff)

it seems like you have an SGpro too, so maybe you can compare them and give us a better thought of which you like better. Because I have a M2 and I was thinking of selling it and getting the SG or LEX but if the MicroX is good I might rethink about it....

No, I don't have an SG, just the M2. But once I get around to shooting some stuff with it, I'll post some pics and write about my experiences with it. I haven't had much time to play with it yet though...

No, it comes with a special 55mm acromat for HD/SD footage. I find it is sharper than when I had the original 72mm HD acromat on it

Get a Z riser on that thing, snorkel up defiantly looks better :-D

I was thinking about something like that, but funds are kind of at a minimal right now, haha. I'm kind of growing fond of the Redrock black with blue accents though :).

I wonder if there's a way for me to use my old riser block under the camera and put the new one under the adapter instead of using the shims that came with it... I'll have to check that out later.

I think it's one of the prettier units out of some of the other ones though haha

EDIT: Just realized if I do that, it will make any follow focus or mattebox basically useless haha... guess I'll have to save up for a riser block if I decide to go snorkel up. I don't think it's that worthwhile of an investment though

Is there anyone else on here with the MicroX? I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of some other similar setups. I know mine is just a basic setup... It's a slow, but rewarding process upgrading my HVX, but I think I'm addicted now ;)

I know this is kind of off topic, but I'm not 100% sure about this... what exactly are the advantages with going with something like a Z-riser and going snorkel up? Is it mainly aesthetic, or are there some worthwhile technical advantages to this?

Ah I see... do you have one personally? If so, did you notice much of an improvement with it? I'm trying to decide whether or not it's worth putting on my ever-expanding goody list lol

I don't have one, unfortunately, I use the Letus Rail system and it favors a snorkel down configuration with all the risers up to their maximum position. It's not the most ideal way to do it. The Z-riser is a very cool idea, but at $350 it's not worth it for me.

Yeah, that's the same thing that I was thinking, the MicroX comes with all the necessary risers and such, and seems pretty sturdy as-is. Also, I could find a lot more useful things to drop $350 on...

Like a certain soon-to-be released follow focus system that there is some buzz about on DVXuser.... *cough* hoarp *cough* haha. Looking forward to that

The reason I got the riser was because, as a steadicam operator, ballence and stability is important. The weight lower down helps it ballence, and the SG block system is quite awkward and it can cause vibrations. The zriser system also looks pretty sexy, another SGpro owner immediatly asked where I got the riser from and mentioned it was definatly a neater setup.

Other than that, theres no real advantage. Other than the fact you no longer need to use the shims that come with the SG (may be differnt for the microX) as the riser is adjustable in height, so you can just slide that up and down to get the camera and the flip to line up.

its a great setup, I love it.

I've read that some people are using the Q-Release from Zacuto because it's $100 cheapter and it basically does the same thing as the Z-rizer. (but you can't adjust the hight)

it seems like it works for the LEX but I woulder if it would work for the M2 or SG as well.
anyone know??

As long as your camera's baseplate is height adjustable then you can compensate for any height differences in the camera height as opposed to the adjusting at the Q-Release (because its not possible). Tim Naylor is using the Q-release with his letus and a chroziel mattebox. Since his setup works with a an industry standard height mattebox, then it should work with an SGPro or M2 just fine.

And its more like saving $160 when going that route.

that's good to know. thanks Arrik
I wounder if the Q-release comes with rods? (and how long?)
if so, that would really be a $160 savings then!!!!
