Redrock Micro Mattebox

What kind of issues are you anticipating? The Redrock mattebox doesn't attach to the lens, so it won't rotate with the lens or anything like that...

I just didn't know if it would extend to the point where it would stick out to far, and bump into a filter or something of the sort. Never used lens like that so... wasn't sure.

The Micro Matte Box comes with these different sized "doughnut" type things, basically black foam circles to mask the light coming from around the lens. It seemed like there was always one that would fit around the zoom part of my lens, so it would move and flex a bit with the movement of the lens, or you just go a size bigger on the doughnut and set the matte box at your widest focal legth.

Ahh, Found a couple of pictures of one of our old rigs. We had purchased a T1i when they had first came out which was somewhat limited but worked for controlled quick shots. We used this on a tripod as well as handheld as it really wasn't that heavy. We wanted a small set of rails and opted for a used set of Cavision carbon rails and baseplate for like $90. But this shows how we used the doughnut type rubber foam discs around the kit 18-55mm lens. Hope this helps give you some ideas.

Andrew,

If you're concerned with the lens telescoping into a filter, don't worry. I've never ran into a lens that moved that much to crash into the first filter tray simply by focusing. In fact, even if you're worried about the lens extending too much when zooming, the microMatteBox has 4" side rails for easy extension, so you can quickly extend the matte box without having to move the camera or follow focus. You also have the ability to replace those rails with any size you'd like, such as 6" or 9"'s. I've never needed that much side rail, nor have I run into anyone who has, but the option is there.
