Redrock Micro M2E

imthinking

I just purchased the new RR M2E and it doesn't come with any detail manual and the instructional video is lacking a ton of items for a new user - My question, if any person here knows, is this: the old adapters seem to have a circle that you are looking through and the new one is a rectangle and it seems to be off to the left by an 1/8 of an inch. This can't be corrected by the horizontal shift at all. Is this the way the new adapter should look? Please don't refer me to the RR forum :) it seems that only dvxusers understand the helping hand philosophy! Yes this is sarcasim you hear in my type :)

Cheers,
Brian

You are doing it right

You are doing it right

I bought a RR MicroXEncore and I had a heap of trouble with the device when I first got it. After many emails back and forth with RR support I finally got mine working correctly.

The things I learned were that it should be a rectangle because of the mirrors used in the flip adapter. If you're image is shifted left or right and you can adjust the adapter to accommodate for the shift fully then you're camera is a misaligned sensor. My sensor was misaligned to the left so much I could never get the image in the center of the rectangle. Support told me that unlike the old adapter the new adapter does not have to be completely centered to get a good image. The only consideration that needs to be made is that if you zoom in to the ground glass and the edges show vignetting you need to zoom in more.

I was also told that even though I was not zoomed into the center of the rectangle that it would not effect the edge to edge sharpness. This I found not to be true. I twisted my adapter slightly to get the image as centered as possible and I found it to be sharper using a focus chart when compared to having the adapter square and my image shifted.

I eventually shot a short film with my M2E last week and my footage is super sharp and has no vignetting. I hope that helps.

you should go to the redrock site , there are tons of videos and forums..I believe they are also on vimeo...

mine isn't perfectly centered either. no matter. i have great edge to edge and zero vignette. just zoom past the rectangle and you're good.

Thanks Cheez and others - I like your demo reel and your myspace sense of humor :)

i dont think my sensor is misaligned cow its just the adapter itself -

This helps a lot if nothing more than to ease a newbies nervous introduction to cinematography!

In the end it's not a big deal if it to be a bit off on the new design. But here's a link to the video: http://vimeo.com/3263838
I'm working on a big write up on my experience with the M2E and using it on the hmc150, xh-a1, hvx200, and soon the ex1 and hf100. Trust me when you get it setup right (which is very easy to do every subsequent time) it looks beautiful.

Hi guys,

You should have received a card with your bundle with information on our support gateway at http://start.redrockmicro.com. Complete setup tutorials for the Encore systems is there along with a variety of other resources.

There's a post in our forums where we researched the frame centering - if you're using the microX Encore the optics are substantially oversized to account for any CCD block alignment or build alignment issues, so if you can get a sharp backfocus around the recommended zoom settings, it won't effect the image you see.

Cheers!

Thanks Andrew for your response and I do like the products that i have just purchased - M2e, Followfocus and the matte box - I will state as a gentle nudge on the shoulder that from a new user (and I mean new to adapters) that it would be nice to have a more in depth and slower pace video for installation. Also a video for setting back focus that is more detailed would be nice. I'm sure for the experienced user that what you have is fine but for a beginner its too fast and too little. I am up to speed now but most of what i needed to learn came from DIY videos outside of RedRock. Again I am very happy with the products!

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the feedback.

We designed the new videos and shot them in hi-def so that they can be paused and scanned through at your leisure. If you're not doing that definitely click the HD button in the upper right and take advantage of that.

Setting backfocus is a pretty simple process with the Encore so if there is something you're not clear on that isn't covered in the video feel free to email me at support@redrockmicro.com.

Cheers!
