RedRock M3

I'm currently filming in the UK for a Channel 4 documentary called "The Life OF Rhyme" - it's an hour long doc celebrating UK MC's and MC culture. Produced by Jamie D'Cruz, who brought you "Exit Through The Gift Shop" and "One Born Every Minute", this is an awesome project to be working on and i'm very proud to be DOP on it.

We're filming the whole darn thing on the quite simply incredible Redrock M3, and i'm totally blown away with it! Having spent most of the last 2 years shooting 5D / 7D, it's amazing to get my hands back on a real video camera again, yet be able to keep that cinematic look that i now wouldn't do without - and that's exactly what the M3 is all about in my opinion! Of all the DOF adaptors i've used in the past, the M3 is by far the best - period. I've been using it with LiveLens mount for Canon EF lenses, and the results i've had are awesome! I've always loved the EF lenses anyway, and it's great to see they work so well with this set up. The clarity and sharpness is next level, and the DOF is stunning. I wasn't surprised at the M3's performance at all to be honest - i knew it would be good because of the reviews! But the general build and ease of use did surprise me. You can just tell it's top quality, and i love that in my gear. I've felt nervous in the past with other adaptors - that spinning parts might brake or back focus may slip, but with the M3 i've not thought twice about it! I just set it spinning and concentrate on the job in hand!

Anyway, i'm going to post some really nice raw footage when i get a break from the doc, and post it for y'all to see. In the mean time, i spent a whopping 30 seconds the other day during a break to film at least something for you to see in the meantime!

If you don't know about the M3, i hope this was useful. Literally can't recommend it enough!

You could work in sales. Lol.

I have always liked the way red rocks image looked. Just wished the light loss wasn't such an issue.

Yeah sorry about the sales man spiel! Didn't mean to sound like that!

With any adaptor you're gonna get the old light loss plague, but the loss with the M3 is minimal to be fair. I've been using it with the Canon XF305, which i reckon is what makes it stand out too. EX1 / EX3 works great too, but it's the fact that the 305 shoots 50mb/s HD that really makes it sharp. We're balls out on this doc right now, but i'll be posting some more test examples this weekend.

Cheers guys!

really nice.
just pay attention to the dust spot in the lower right corner, in case you're going to record more clips

Just to stress i really rushed this, and didn't put any thought or effort into polishing the shots. Well spotted. ;)

The M3 loses barely any light at all with this new adapter. Where you lose more light now isn't in the adapters...that issue is taken care of, but rather the light lost by the stopping down of the cameras lens because of the required zoom in on the GG.

BUDDERS, could you tell me what zoom point the XF has to be at to properly setup the M3? Can you also give me the F stop setting the zoom forces? It should close a little as you zoom in...so what's the widest open the lens can be and still keep a proper zoom for the GG?

Zoomed in to 26 as marked on the ring (i'll leave to do do the maths in mm's) with F2.4 at it's widest.

So that means it goes to about 35mm or so, and closes from F1.6 at it's widest to F2.4 so a loss of 0.8 stops...not bad at all. I think my old XH-A1 closed from F1.6 to F3.4 (1.8 stop loss), needed a zoom point of 72 or so which was a lot.

Running and gunning - the doc continues!

We're flat out still shooting the doc, and yesterday have gone into to edit for 6 weeks offline. Apparently so far so good! A very happy editor! I promise to post some more stuff as soon as i can!
