Redrock M2

You cannot purchase the M2 from anywhere other than Redrock. I live in the UK and they are no problem. Place your order and wait 12 weeks. (the length of the waiting list so don't expect to get it quicker than that)
I use three Nikons with it.
17-35mm 2.8
35-70mm 2.8
80-200mm 2.8

Those three cover all bases, and you can get some cheap faster primes off ebay.co.uk if you don't want to use zooms, though I have found they are not really needed so far.

The M2 and HVX have been tested and results have been outstanding.

Thanks Steve. Much appreciated info :)

Can anyone answer this?

The Red Rock M2 flips the image upside down - is there an option in the HVX200 menus to flip the image back to the right way, for monitoring purposes through the viewfinder/LCD?

No, there isn't. Not at the moment. But you can achieve that with a variety of external monitors or through a bit of cludge with Mirror Mode (you won't see exactly what you're getting but if you can wrap your brain around it...)

HVX/M2 combo is the emerging gold standard for anyone wanting filmic images at less that 35mm budgets.( the few reviews I've seen all prefer the M2) I've been playing with mine for a couple of weeks and I think I'm very close to nailing it. I've been planning for this combination since last September when I ordered both items and safe to say it is the magic combination I had hoped. I've said it before and it is absolutely true...HVX/M2/P2 combo is like shooting S16 with an endless supply of film and telecine. A revolution indeed ! The image is flipped so you need a monitor on the camera and the you flip the image in your NLE. It has been raining here in Hawaii for literally weeks but I hope to post some footage in the not too distant future.

Poi Boy,
Am I understanding you correctly --- does it really take "a couple of weeks" to figure out the proper use of an M2? What are the obstacles one must overcome?

Thanks guys and...

What did the duty fees/VAT come to Steve when it finally arrived on your doorstep?

The pulsing of the GG is very obvious in the Busgirl footage. Maybe it's enhanced by the compression, but it's pretty bad. Almost had a fit :)

darwinandpaine,
It's taken me a couple of weeks because I have a lot going on and haven't done that exclusively. The first footage I shot was great but I could see that I had to fine tune things. For instance the backfocus needs to be adjusted through a time consuming trial and error process. It is designed to work with so many camera /lens combinations that you need to get it right for your equitment.

Be prepared to pay about 20% of the amount you spent. No getting away from it.

Busgirl was shot with an earlier version of the M2, with an old version GG.
I have not seen this effect in the newer footage.

I wasn’t going to show this because it’s not exactly my “best work” but if you will take into consideration that it’s only a first test, about 30 minutes after taking the M2 out of the box . . .

http://david-regenthal.com/hvx_m2/hvx_m2_b.html

You can only really get a “feel” for it due to the size & compression but I haven’t seen much else with the HVX and M2 and thought I would take the time to thoroughly embarrass myself. I will try to post a full size grab when I get back from Austin, Texas around the 1st.

I don’t want to take 10k hits on this so I will pull it down tomorrow some time.
And yes, I know, the headspace is a off . . . I’ll have to get after her about that <g>.

There is some zooming in the footage when pulling the focus. But it´s not too bad. What lenses did you use? I´m trying to get a feel for what is possible with fotoprimes.

Hey Dregenthal,

The footage looks great but I have one question. There are little white specs that appear on the screen from time to time. Is that the filmscreen?

flipping the footage in an NLE requires rendering right, and therefore some loss in image quality...

am I wrong?

Agreed. I did not expect quite the same result as I might have gotten spending 10-11k but I don't think the average joe is even going to notice it. I got the Nikon mount with mine -- used a 50mm and 85mm on this.

Nope, that's me accidently making the camera look bad by not ajusting any of the settings and getting some little square mosaic looking noise as a consequence (regretably). Not typical of me (or the camera).

I usually render clips out uncompressed and therefore do not see additional light loss . . . of course that goes out the window when compressed for the web. Remember, this is not the GG with the least light loss--I still have that in the box but will show it next time.

What settings are you using for the HVX and the M2? I also have the Nikon mount and will be picking up my HVX next Monday. I hear it needs to be shimmed up a little more than the FX1, but what about zoom settings?

If you use the M2, do you have to shoot the whole video/movie with it, or could you use the M2 only for those scenes when you need a shallower depth of field and/or rack focus?

The M2 is a tool for you to use to get shallow DOF. If your scene calls for narrow DOF, take it off and you will have your narrow DOF. Otherwise, you will have to stop down your Nikon or equivalent lens quite a bit to get the desired narrow DOF. For example, when you want to do a Steadicam shot and can't pull focus. ALso, I'm sure it will be easier to move around without the adapter on it.
