Redrock Follow Focus

Does anyone own the redrock follow focus? The reviews they post on the RR site seem pretty positive and I am interested in it. Looks like quite a bargain at the $700 price point. Unfortunately I have been unable to get through to someone at Redrock to assist me with my pre-sales questions so I am relying on community feedback to make my decision.

There are some good reviews here > http://redrockmicro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1668

And some not so good reviews peppered through here > http://redrockmicro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2197

But I am still interested in what DVXuser users have to say

Anyway if you own one of these I would be very interested in hearing from you to find out what you love/hate about it.

Thanks!

I do own one. I am not expert, or have experience with anything else.
But I like it. I had issue with my Canon 50mm 1.8f len since the focus ring is 5mm wide and on the edge in angle, so I had to put something in there so the ring doesn't slide, but all adaptor will have the same problem. Except that, there is SLIGHT motion that does nothing... but from what I read, it better than alot of other one at over that price.

I love mine... used it on two shoots in the past four days, one of them handheld!

It did have some play when I first got it, but I took it apart and put it together again, making sure everything was tight and secure. Now I get spot on focus every time I pull to my pre-set stops. I use it with a wide variety of Nikon lenses... primes and zooms.

Owen,
Exactly how did you remove the play?
Just taking it apart, and tightening everything down?
I will say if you are going to use this with the stock HVX lens I would recomend a different focus gear than RedRocks AbelCine makes a good one. The redrock is a little thick for the stock lens. and tends to rub slightly on the camera body.

I own one, and for $500 it's well worth it. The play is a non issue if you have a first AC who can activley watch his pulling. If you are pulling focus yourself, it can be a tiny bit annoying. But, again, for $500 it's deffinitley a good deal.

I'm wondering how you did that. The gear-box used in the Redrock FF is cast inside a PVC box (and is produced by a company called Huco Engineering) and there's no way to open it up without breaking the box. I was thinking about opening it up since I can get a replacement part for it quite cheap if it's not possible to remove the play and close it up nicely, but I haven't gotten around to do that yet.

Exactly, the box cannot be opened, but it can be milled. There is a thread on here describing how to fix the play by inserting a thin shim, but I don't really want to try it since I just bought the upgrade to V2 gearbox which is supposed to be much better. However, I can tell you it is terrible, with lots of noticeable play. I'm pretty dissappointed with this considering Redrock's repuation and that everything else I have from them is rock-solid...
