Redrock blues...

Is there any reason other than the price why anyone would even consider purchasing the M2. Is seems they are quickly falling behind in performance and features, but if people are buying them....

RedRock I guarantee still have the lead in sales monthly, compared to all of the other companies because of one fact, They have more ADS than anyone else, and more popular things have been made with them in that past and have been published in magazines. I swear, when I look back at old american Cinematographer and read articles about how well the M2 worked on set with people and the results they are producing, I reach fro m my wallet... I also think other than shoot35 a FF available with the purchase of your adapter helps. A lot of starter need an adapter and a FF, and RedRock offers that, Plus they are at all the big expos on the west cost: CineGear, DVExpo, FCP meets, Brian is constantly out on the road selling his product. They have great CS, and the M2 is still favored be many users on here that rather use it than other adapters. It is all preference and by saying it is falling behind is a little extreme, Its a tried and true design, but remember everything can use an update and there is no perfect adapter out here.

thank you, I wont get to play with it till tomorrow, I ll get some footage up on monday(if everything works right :). P.S. you wernt being harsh, but I think you wont see an update for at-least another year or two, They are busy with their wireless FF, shoulder mount, and grips, matte box, and there new power systems to redesign there M2.

Well, it's not quite so extreme in my opinion. Coming from someone who's used both the M2 and the Letus EX, in term of features the M2 simply cannot compete, such as sharpness, light loss, convenience of setup etc. It was good for when the 35mm adapter world was in its infancy, but the adapter itself is badly in need of an update, which I suspect Redrock has to be hard at work on.

The M2, a great example of how commercial succes does not garantuee quality.
The other day I had my SGpro on set and some assistant came to me and showed me his M2, he was like "yeah it's a better and more succesfull product of what you have".

I immediately installed the M2 and we did a side by side comparison. "Weird, I've never seen that edge-to-edge sharpness problem before." or "I never realised that there was so much vignette." were his reactions. He even asked me if I haven't accidentally mixed up the cables to the monitor feed.

Once again: Redrock laid a path for indi-cinema. And that's cool. But the product has become old, and has been blown away by all the other adapters out there. Change can be good too you know.

I agree the M2 has fallen behind but their FF is still right up there.

EDIT: And the mattebox is going to make them a mint!

i just want to see a price on their shoulder mount / grips rig and possibly even a release date :) go hv20! :D

That make 2 of us! and the wireless FF would be nice, came with the Matte box, But first. The grips and shoulder mount. I dont see why they can start producing the prototype that was CineGear last year, It worked great and felt great also. Send that off and make duplicates REDROCK!

I think people forget that people may not necessarily be as "enlightened" outside this forum. Right now as I'm in school I make my money selling people cameras like the ones used here (XHA1, hvxs, EX1s, hpxs) and you'd be extremely surprised to learn the number of "filmmakers" out there who just don't know the level of possibility available with this stuff.

They've never heard of 35mm adapters, never thought about follow focuses, monitors, rails you name it. This doesn't make them dumb or anything, they're just not as well researched, they get excited when I tell them about the M2, SGpro, brevis, letus.

Those who have heard of adapters have heard of either the mini35 or the M2.
Redrock has done an excellent job marketing themselves as not just an internet company, but a real company, a brand. This is something that because of timing the other guys are just starting to get into and because dvxuser happens in real time, we basically get to hear about all the great stuff as it happens. Not everyone is this lucky.

I'm almost positive that redrock has the most adapter sales right now, whether or not everyone here thinks they deserve it. I do believe they make a good product, all main guys make a good product right now.

That's why I'm trying to get the company I work for to carry the brevis line, there's a huge demand for it but people don't know exactly what it is and where to find it, and a lot of people want to feel safe buying it in the store, which none of the guys have perfected yet.

RR Equipment is still incredible, especially the Follow Focus. The RR Mattebox is going to be a killer addition.

And I wouldn't dare think that the RR haven't been watchin' the chessboard. When they do drop something, they'll have the most publicity out of everyone because of their established track record.

You can confirm that one just by sending them an email, and still wait on a non automated reply :D
... but they do respond fast to forum pm's - go internet :)

Anytime a new product comes on board it seems as if the comp is suddenly falling behind especially if its well received. Many of us are multiple adapter owners. I have the Brevis, the LEX and the original Letus Flip (for sentimental reasons). But there is nothing wrong with the M2, have you seen Nathan Beaman's work? Wow! Definitely one of the top DP's on this board. The only annoying thing about RR is the gap between their product announcement and its arrival to market, but if you've followed Richard Andrewski's thread from China, manufacturing new products is a mother.

Yeah guys definitly check out Nathans work, I havent seen anything else on here that comes even close to what he is doing, whether it be with the Letus or the SG.
As stated by others already, RR is a real company that produces multiple products, each product takes time to bring to market and there is an amazing amount of new stuff in the works.

I'm sure Redrock has something in the works... keep in mind guys that lots of companies make announcements without any warning or hinting. Look at Cinevate, they just released solid carbon fibre rails... and there was definitely no warning, leaks, or hints about that.

I've used the LE, The M2, and the SG (I own the M2) and I can say without a doubt that I prefer the M2 over both the LE and the SG. Why? Don't get me wrong, the SG and the LE are great products and they perform at an amazing level, they just don't produce the "look" that I want which the M2 does oh so nicely.

If I want people to have people say "oh that's an amazingly sharp image" i'll go with a LE, but I want people to say "what film stock did you use for that?" (which I have had people ask me) and they're surprised when I tell them it's HD. In fact my film professor thought I shot on 500T 16mm when I actually shot with the HVX and M2.

It's all about what you want individually. I think RR has really set the standard and people should try to make better products than the M2, that's what makes being an indie filmmaker so great, you have LOTS of options.

Personally I will be selling my M2 once the G35 comes out with an EOS mount for my Zeiss lenses, I think all of the footage I've seen from the G35 blows away any adapter out there in terms of replicating 35mm, which is my ultimate goal as an indie filmmaker.

So, to each their own :)
