RED vs Sony. . .and so it begins?

Its in the Sony F3/F5/F55 section already, four pages long. A "merge" of posts may be in order.

Here is my response however;

There's a juicy thread on RED USER I booked marked at home and don't have access to it here (nor the patience to try and find) but in the discussion it was pretty clear that RED actually patented the idea of recording the raw format with wavelet compression, so it was not so much just patenting the notion of recording raw but some of the schema used behind it. Oddly enough Cineform is also a wavelet codec, but obviously posing no threat to camera sales to RED.

Sony, a very smart and equally rich company, has likely done it's homework on RED's patent and stayed clear of the methods employed by RED.

This is the downside of when you patent something since you end up fully documenting it and making it available to the public making it very easy for a giant company like Sony to "improve upon" an existing patent and then patent it themselves, or not patent it and keep it as a "trade secret".

In the end Jim is in for a big surprise and Sony will prevail, just watch.
