Or should the title be,
RED abandons making cameras below 20k ?
JB
With the Scarlet-W and Raven still current, I don't think that is accurate.
I read through 60 pages over at RedUser and was struck by two things:
1.) People are still buying cameras as assets on a financial model sets them up for pain when those assets depreciate. I don't think you can do that, these days. The cycle is too fast. There are all kinds of reasons to buy an $80,000 camera, but I can't imagine the camera itself holding resale value should be one of them. I get that in some cases this was a sudden drop for people, but still. There is a good post out there somewhere from last year that I wish I had the link to about why young DPs especially should be careful buying cameras... a lot of good advice in there. Taking on debt and expecting rental income to pay the bills is a dangerous game.
2.) NYU is nuts. 78k/year tuition and *most students* own Alexa Minis or similar? To the point where a student feels seriously disadvantaged not owning something similar? What the heck?
If you buy a camera or any other piece of gear hoping it will hold its "resell value", you're buying it for the wrong reasons and probably in for a rude awaking when you do try to sell it. I've never bought a piece of gear with the thought of "what can I sell it for when I'm done with it or want something new?" Buy it and make money with it NOW. Cameras are not houses, stocks or 401(k)'s. They are tools to make money with, not investments.
I2.) NYU is nuts. 78k/year tuition and *most students* own Alexa Minis or similar? To the point where a student feels seriously disadvantaged not owning something similar? What the heck?
Well are they?
Well are they ? They are listed still on RED but I really had to dig in the store to find a Raven. The announcement seems to be saying “We have too many variants and we’re simplifying to these three sensors in this one body”
Doesn’t that mean at a minimum that all other bodies aren’t going to get any further development ? That they’re effectively EOL ?
If you click on camera builder to put together a kit on RED’s store you sure don’t get to even see that other cameras exist.
http://www.red.com/builder
I’m just inferring by reading between the lines.

I'm sorry, this isn't meant to be rude but you had to dig? You literally have to click "Cameras" under the store tab and both cameras are right there. Or literally click "products" http://www.red.com/products and the Scarlet-W and Raven are right there next to DSMC-2. If thats digging I need to begin praying for the patience of our society.
They're definitely not killing off that line of cameras. There are tons of Scarlets and Ravens out there.
I’m sure no one wants to hear this but here goes.
Click on RED.com. I didn’t see any mention of raven or Scarlet. I click on products. I see DSMC2 and go there. All the new cameras. I click on “store” and then the top of that list is “camera builder” and I assume this is where you go to build a basket of items starting with a camera and then accessories. There’s no mention of Raven Or Scarlet.
It’s only on my third “look” that I found it under “cameras” under “store” that it showed up for me.
I’m not starting a conspiracy theory. I’m just asking the question because REDs own language seems to be telling me.
JB
You make it seem like you're actively trying to not find them. Read my quote above. I can navigate to their website, click once and find it. Much easier to find than going to Panasonic.com or Sony.com. But they're not making cinema cameras either anymore based on the logic of simple website navigation being the telling sign a camera is EOL?
You're not trying to start a conspiracy theory, but you're also actively trying to hint at something that clearly isn't happening based on a website design you don't understand the navigation for?
