RED Scarlet and Bomb EVF Hands on - Engadget

ha I liked how they shouted out the D3s. I don't blame them though for offering to trade- even though the D3s is full frame and about the same price I would trade any of the DSLRs for a 2/3" Scarlet right now too (don't judge me). I think they were using the D3s for stills and a 7D for the video interview though. Not sure on that but they had mentioned how they were shooting with a 7d for engadget in a previous post.

Just amazing. A press conference for a non working prototype. Uh Oh, the delays are killing the hype. Quick have a press conference - that will satisfy the Red drones for a few more months.

Thanks for posting that. I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Whenever I've expressed it in the past, I've been blasted by fanboys.

I say in the future we compare Scarlet to the non-existing Canon XH-IV that has all the EOS 1d Mark IV has, but in a camcorder body, with IMAX specs, and will have a list price of $3995. Oh, it's also 3D, did I mention that? This camera doesn't exist you say? Well, neither does Scarlet, and I'm sure Canon has cameras like this on their drawing board, and economics will drive the price of the camera down to a cheap price point someday anyway.

Real companies deliver.

Real companies deliver.

Last time I checked Red delivered a camera to the market and other companies, say like Canon, present non-working mockups to the press as well. The big difference between Red and traditional camera companies is marketing and openness. We are just now hearing about this new Canon camera, but how long do you think it's been in development? We all know how long Scarlet's been on the drawing board because Red is fairly open w/it's development and this back-and-fourth w/their user base, and potential user base, creates not just customers but fans as well (for better or for worse). If Red was a band or an indie filmmaker I'm pretty sure everyone on this site would be praising their success at grassroots marketing.

W/that being said, I'd be perfectly fine not hearing another peep about Scarlet and Epic until the cameras start shipping. I don't blame the guys at Red for being passionate and vocal about their work but the fanboys and amateurs who keep squawking about how awesome Red is and how every other camera maker sucks are just a it annoying.

I am so with you Andrew. Enough already, it is reaching the point of absolute ridiculousness. I am sure that SOMEDAY, when RED finally ships working Scarlets, they will be great. Until then though, STFU.

Whoops! Did I say that out loud? Sorry.

Dan

Are you telling me to STFU? Or are you telling all the Red people and fans who keep telling everyone this camera is the greatest thing since the can opener and gushing over it, even though it doesn't exist in a working form to STFU?

If me, why? I think I have a valid point. Red has delivered one camera, that's it. They hyped it, hyped it and hyped it. It was late, and buyers were beta testers. And then they hyped Scarlet, and Epic beyond anything I have ever seen in technology, and they have announced one delay after another after another, followed by more hype and more promises, followed by more delays, followed by more hype.

Is it wrong for me to tell a salesman of a company to put up or shut up, when they spend so very much time gabbing away about how incredible their product is? A product that isn't even close to being to market?

I honestly don't get it?

I believe he's agreeing with YOU. He's not telling you to STFU.. He's telling fanboys of non-existent gear to stfu.

Okay got it.

I should point out I'm definitely not trying to criticize the people that own a Red One and are happily shooting with it. That's all good.

It's the way someone like Jannard or Schwartz can talk about something on Red, and make promises, and the fanboys swallow it hook line and sinker. And the way little or no criticism is leveled by most people at Red for failing to deliver on their own hype, because in their eyes they inoculated themselves from such criticism with blanket statements like "Everything subject to change. Count on it". As if this were a company flair, and acceptable marketing tactics.

Anyway, off my high horse.

Snow, Snow, Snow....

Big misunderstanding, I was saying for RED to STFU, the amount of static they fill the press and airwaves with is deafening. I think you are a cool dude and almost always agree with you. My bad for not making that clear.

Rock on!

Well, not even the fanboys, they need to have a purpose in their lives ;-) I mean RED themselves. A press conference/review/announcement for a hunk of styrofoam/balsa wood? Gimme a break guys, I can't take it anymore.

Yes, I read that and it doesn't really do much to change my opinion of how RED functions from a PR standpoint. I do think that it is an interesting move to buy a Hollywood lot but in the end, it will probably end up functioning like Panavision's stages do, a place where they can shoot tests and have seminars and they will rent it out. BTW, if you are in LA, Panavision stage 1 is my favorite stage to shoot on and it is the best deal in LA.

I have shot with the RED One twice and I don't particularly like the camera. The IR contamination issues, the crashing/rebooting issues and the RED workflow in post are all downers for me. I think that some great work is shot on REDs and they are capable of making great images, but the workflow and reliability issues are troubling and will make me very skeptical of shooting client projects with any RED camera. You try keeping a producer or client happy when you are behind and the camera crashes and needs to reboot. It is not a fun situation.

I think Scarlet will be huge for 3D shooters, it will be the highest quality camera on a budget that is still small enough for a reasonably sized, reasonable weight 3D rig. I look forward to the products they are coming out with, I just wish that they put half as much work into completing the actual products as they do with feeding the hype/PR machine.
