Red pixelation on dvx100b footage? Need Help!

I have been doing test with my dvx settings to try and find a picture I like.

For some reason when ever I shoot red objects they pixelate.

Why is that, and how can I correct it?

Posting twice, doing it in the wrong forum both times, and then bumping your own threads isn't going to get you an answer any faster.

Red is notoriously difficult for DV to encode. Try adding a slight amount of gaussian blur.

Thanks. I figure this was a sole dvx problem, thus hardware.

Anyway thanks.

BTW, does HVX200s have the same problem with red?

It is a problem with the DV codec. If the HVX shoots DV, it will exhibit the same problem.

With the HVX you have the option of shooting DVCPro50, which is a SD codec but with 4:2:2 color sampling. It handles red better than DV does.

Thanks for the follow up. This really worries me. I guess I can reduce the amount of red in a shot, and use the gaussian blur technique.

When I step up to the HVX200 I should be able to reduce the chance of rotten reds by recording in 720p at 24 frames hopefully.

I wouldn't add guassian blur, that will just blur all of your footage, I would add chroma blur on the horizontal axis, that should clear up that read problem for you. Do a search on chroma blur and you find tons of threads on this.

Thanks for the info scharky. I'll try that.
