Red One

Ok... would it be a good/bad idea to invest in a Red One. As in, taking out a loan for 40K, buying all the needed equipment ( mounts, powerpacks, lenses, lcd, ect) and loaning it out to anyone interested, such as universities, independent filmmakers and so on... I live in orlando, which has a few schools in the area, so I would assume there would be some sort of use for the camera. Just thinking out loud.

Let me know what ya'll think... thx =)

I think if you are buying the camera to RENT out to other people, and you AREN'T a RENTAL HOUSE, that that is a BAD business decision.

Rental houses have multiple cameras, hundreds of thousands of dollars in glass, and the support staff necessary to service clients.

Bad idea for precisely the reasons stated by Matt. With 2500 units out there, the market will soon be saturated with experienced to expert owner-operators. These cameras will be the lowest-cost options, but come with the highest risk. The spectre of mechanical failure without contingency will keep most of these from working on studio projects.

Rental houses are the most appropriate place for this camera. RED isn't an F900 or Varicam. It is much more akin to owning an Arriflex or MovieCam and all the expensive, complex AKS that go along with them.

Even the most basic elements of the kit would challenge a beginning / intermediate owner-op. Maintaining a professional (not Nikon) glass package to a professional standard is beyond the aptitude of most operators - a daunting task that is typically the domain of a professionally trained technician.
