RED ONE ships

Can't wait to see how this impacts the production world! But honestly..the cynic in me is dreading the barriage of clips of unlit "first footage" of people's cats, porches, living rooms and garages that started out at 4K and was crushed into a tiny quicktime. I will still download and watch every single one, though...

Edit: I just downloaded the first one..I was wrong: It was unlit footage in a garage..only it was a giant 2K quicktime that won't play on my lame G5 video card.

There isn't any 2k enabled on Red for the first units. You must record at its native 4k in RedCode raw for now.

Red, Red, Red. Sick of the hype already. I want to see Peter Jackson film something with an HV20, dammit.

I combed through the RED site and have seen the footage... This camera is a marvel to look at and it's a *total* shock to see the footage shot with it. This is a new era...

"You may get your wish on jan, 8th - jj abram's Cloverfield is shot entirely with a consumer hd home video camera. http://www.1-18-08.com"

Not true. Some of it was shot with a couple HVX200s the rest (all visual effects shots) were shot with a Viper and the Sony F23.

Screw it. I'm giving up filming and focusing going into HD makeup school lol. Christ, did you see the zits and pores on that guy? I just downloaded the eyes.tiff and 2K.

either I'm going into HD makeup school. Or specializing to become an "HD Makeup editor" lol. I can just see it now... The number one editing plug-ins to sell will be HD skin softeners. To wipe your pours and shaven grain growing back facial hair away.

Well, to be fair: Five o'clock Shadows are present in a great deal of movies. You can see Keaneu Reeves' in all of the Matrix series.

no. not videos. It looks like SLR stills in motion. But load up that 2k on your FCP and see it on a real NTSC monitor. It will look and feel like 35mm footage.

We also have to remember that film has grain. RED has no grain and is virtually noiseless. So in order to REALLY get the film look from RED footage, you'd probably have to do a filmout.

Otherwise, like dvpixl said - it's SLR in motion. :)

I've been watching many HD productions in Korea projected digitally in upscale stadium sized cinemas and all I can say is that even though these movies do not look like 35mm or Super 16mm film, they look pretty stunning.

These are projects shot anywhere between budgets of 200k to 500k and most likely used Sony's F 23, and the images are clean with great dynamic range. Most did not add any grain filters, and they absolutely work as dramatic narrative pieces, although many of them had cliched genre plotlines.

There was definitely noise in some of the darker shots but nothing the average viewer would notice. Also, these wer huge screens. The overwhleming majority of shots lit right looked cleaner than film and more vibrant.

I hope Red opens the floodgates for even more films shot on tiny budgets that can start to match some of the bigger budgeted films at least on the format front. This is an exciting time for screenwriters and directors who have stories that might not fit in the Hollywood paradigm...

"Can someone point me to an article that says it was shot on an HVX200?"

no article published yet I think, inside scoup
