RED on a Flyer.

Hi,

I had borrowed a Steadicam Archer to do a Red shoot at the famous Ace Cafe in London, but unfortunately (the day before the shoot) we were told that we couldn't insure it, so we had to leave it at home. Not wanting to waste the shoot, I took the red apart, stripped it down and managed to get it light enough to go on the steadicam Flyer.

The rig included:

Camera body with Nikon 17-35 lens
Hocus Focus motor and receiver (with sony battery ontop)
Redbyte downconverter (with 4aa battery box to power it)
RED hard drive.
RED pro 7inch LCD.

I used the Tiffen RED steadicam power cable to power the camera, which meant changing the 2pin power plug on the Flyer to a 3pin.

I was suprised, but I managed to get the rig ballenced perfectly. Drop time was perfect, and since all the weight was right over the post, dynamic balance was good. The arm had a bit more strength, and was not totaly maxed out and thanks to the redbyte, the steadicam LCD worked perfectly.

Anyway just thought I would prove that this is possible, as it is commonly belived that the Red is too fat for the Flyer.

I got some nice screengrabs from the shoot, which I stuck up in the stills photography section.

Nice work, man. Black straps instead of Red but awesome.

A stripped down RED is the funnest, ever.

Nice! Original Flyer too no less.

What batteries are you running on the bottom there? And with the downcoverter why use the RED LCD at all?

Its not the very original one (grey arm) but its not the LE.

Using two RED bricks on the bottom. The monitor was there to judge colour, exposure and to assist focus, as the steadicam monitor via the redbyte is not to be trusted with such critical things. I used the steadicam monitor for framing as usual.

Its also such a nice monitor, its quite nice to glance up at it and see the amazing images this thing produces. Also this was quite a public meet, and after the public (the car enthusiasts) saw the image on that monitor and the smooth shots we were taking, they bent over backwards to help us get the shots we wanted... And who can blame them,

God I want my own RED :-(

Wow, those reflections are just amazing... Love that camera. Good to know on the RED lcd and bricks.

And true, had forgotten all about the grey armed "original" - yeah I meant "non-LE" I suppose. Can't wait to start taking Scarlet jobs someday... now that will be a light rig...
