RED Komodo to start limited shipping soon for $6k

Leica is using mostly Sony sensors and guts these days. But their color science and lenses in combination create a unique non-Sony look.

I thought Leica re-brands the Panasonic Lumix cameras and uses Towerjazz sensors (also partly owned by Panasonic). Did they switch to Sony?

I think you are right for the M mount/L mount models. Still a different tweak on color science and firmware. The Leicas have a distinct look to them.

So looks like I may be getting to check out the komodo in person tomorrow and will bring my black magic (and maybe my sony) to try and get some comparison shots. Anything specific anyone would like to see?

I'd love to see where the highlights and shadows break down by comparison.

Komodo VS BMPCC6k side by side casual comparison. Besides the obvious global shutter differences, I'm seeing a bit better fine color discrimination and color depth on Komodo and a denser texture to the image that shows up particularly in the shot with the wood tables. Also the absence of moire on Komodo. Shows up on the lens gears in the opening shot.

Wow awesome test thanks for sharing. Without a matching lens, I feel like it's hard to draw absolute conclusions on color and DR.

DR of Komodo seems a bit better though and color a bit richer.

You definitely notice that rolling shutter in handheld shake when they're side by side!

And oh boy that Komodo looks like a cute camera, aside from the big ass batteries sticking off the back

Yeah the form factor of the camera is so appealing to me, small but easy to rig up when needed. Its the one thing I hate about the black magic pocket cameras and why i'm selling mine, its such a weird shape and needs to be rigged up thus defeating the purpose of a small camera to me.

It’s disingenuous really to say Sony sensors and think it’s a sony inside.

Leica have long also had a relationship with Panasonic, who have made a lot of their lower cost cameras that are often just rebadged Panasonic cameras, with the leica name replacing the Panasonic one. They do sometimes have genuine differences, but it’s usually superficial.

Panasonic have also long had Leica branded lenses, and the degree to true leica involvement has always been in question. Best I can summarise is consulting on design and helping with manufacturing processes and QA.

Panasonic themselves have also been rumoured to have sony sensors.

This is what’s not really apparent. Sony are a customer of Sony sensor fab. They don’t get any special advantage. Otherwise Panasonic (or whoever) wouldn’t go to Sony for a custom sensor.

They’re seperate customers. They don’t steal IP, share upcoming models. They couldn’t have a sensor buisiness if they did.

There’s Leica’s that are just Panasonic’s with a different badge, there’s Leica’s that are made by Leica with panny help, and there’s Leica’s that are Leica from the ground up, all of which use combinations of different sensors from different companies.

Leica have been doing this for a while...go back to the CL / CLE...bodies made by Minolta(Which was later bought by Sony) and lenses branded as Leica and Minolta, identical design, made in Germany and Japan (depending)

Great test! Now we know that Red’s $6K camera is a bit better than Blackmagic’s $2K camera. I’d like to see it compete against the UMPG2. Let’s see Blackmagic’s $6K camera vs Red’s $6K camera.

Feels like the 2020 indie cameras are as exciting as they were back in the DVX100 days.

(Something about the shape of the Komodo reminds me of the DVX's rear half.

I didn't shoot this, but this is one of my favourite tests for mood, as well as showing off the DR (truck headlights) and rolling shutter (skate stuff, although it's slomo)

Pretty cool.

I feel like the IQ is good enough on most of the new cameras coming out now that the body you choose depends on the features/codecs you need for your project or your clientele (raw, global shutter, autofocus, slow motion, S35 vs FF, gimbal-friendly size, etc)

This Komodo DR test was not done by me, so I cannot say if this is a definitive test or not, but could very well be close.

as a point of reference, here is CineD's. (Cinema 5D's) Canon C300mkIII DR Xyla chart test:

If I didn't know any better, I'd think there was a contract that all "beta" Komodo buyers had to sign that says they will make a ********* skateboarding video. They're like the RED version of internet cat videos.

But with MUCH better glass...

I need to see a cat on a skateboard Komodo video before I can make my final decision

I must admit, it is a different thing once it is in your hands. That's when it hits home, that this is a tiny power sipping RED.

Oh believe me, I like what I see too. Both the body and the images. Probably not the right camera for me to buy next, though.
