RED Komodo to start limited shipping soon for $6k

This may not be the right thread, but we were having a Leica conversation earlier...

An interesting rangefinder just launched called Pixii. M mount, no screen, just a rangefinder viewfinder, and transfers photos automatically (and instantly?) to your phone.

Interesting for making you focus on what you're shooting rather than how! But APS-C (bad match for the lenses) and 2900 euros.

A fool and his money...

That Leica looks cool but you can't format the sd card in camera? And the same camera with LCD screen costs $600 LESS? And it's $6k? Lol

Honestly really changes the way you mentally approach making pictures ....

No chimping so you need to anticipate light exposure and focus ... and amazing thing is that
like the film days ... 95% of it works out ... and the other 5% is a learning experience ... what to
do differently going forward.

Without the LCD the battery lasts ... forever ... day or two.

One of my favorite cameras of all time ...

$6K is a relative value ... based on when you divest ...

I bought a Rolex Submariner watch in 1981 ... sold it in 2016 ... for 4 times what I paid for it.

Many digital cameras lose value rapidly because the manufacturers are always churning the market
with new gear ... but Arri ... Leica ... any decent glass ... tends to hold more of its value so over time.

Shooting without a screen is an interesting exercise and I might want to do it for a week or two, but definitely not more than that.

I already did the "only manual primes" thing for several years, and yes, it forces you to slow down and think about what you are doing, move your feet instead of just turning the zoom ring, think about your aperture, etc. But after a few months it's just limiting. If there were zooms as fast and sharp and light as my primes, I'd go for that: changing lenses is a pain and by now I'm much more likely to get a sub-par shot because I'm lazy and don't want to change lenses, than because I'm lazy and don't want to move my feet. I'm going for AF as soon as there's a cheap camera with IQ matching my p4k and AF that is as good in video mode as it is for stills with the eye-detect thing.

For what it’s worth, the top screen on the Komodo is not that great, and you can use the camera like a range finder, but shoot 24frames per second....

......tough crowd

Smooth and responsive pulls, nice settling into the mark. Now it "just" needs object and face tracking...

Doesn't it only work in the center? What if you're framing the subject at the edge or recomposing during the shot? Seems limiting

Settle down, lol...they are working on it, just started.

This is how all AF cameras begin, Canon and Sony too, with just a box in the middle (one size, maybe two).

Wrong thread for this but we were talking about Leica earlier - some indications from landscape photographers that the A7R4 trounces the new Leica M-10 monochrom in detail after doing a basic desaturation to the Sony files.

Probably says more about what Sony is delivering than any issues with the Leica. They also claim that Sony and Voigtlander lenses deliver more detail. Again, these are pixel-peeping landscape photographers who are not interested in lens character or camera shooting style. But that's part of the reason I enjoy reading diglloyd - he's maniacally focused on basic technical performance. The dude loves pixelshifting and focus stacking, for example

That's alright, it isn't real. Film was.

I always find it amusing. A LOT of Sony users are always striving and comparing to Leica for some reason. I also see a lot of Leica lenses on Sony cameras too...It's usually Sony shooters that errr...post this kind of comparison ?

Landscape photography and Leica M don't really go together. It's a rangefinder. You can't even 100% be sure what you're framing up. Anything wider than 28MM forces you to use an external viewfinder sight, so you're now using one viewfinder to frame (poorly for landscapes) and another to focus. The camera is barely weatherproof and lenses certainly aren't. There's no tilt shift lenses either.

It's like arguing that a Bushmaster truck gets way better off-road performance than a Tesla model X.

And as we're starting to learn with the 12K, there's a lot to be discussed around pixel quality rather than just straight resolution....

Right - my take on it was they were stacking up against the Leica because a monochrome sensor can deliver more detail in B/W than a Bayer sensor. So the pixel-peeper's question is would I benefit from this Leica if I were making B/W shots.

Re:framing/focus, surely you can use live view, no?

In defense of Lloyd, he plays with many different cameras. I think his favorite for landscape is the Fuji GFX but he cant afford it and shoots Sony. He has said that Panasonic has the best pixel-shift mode. The man is a pretty straight-shooter and brand-agnostic

(I'm not a huge fan of his compositions though. I often find that people who pay excess attention to technicalities pay less attention to aesthetics...)

But he's always a fun read and occasionally teaches me things I didnt know I didn't know.

The UMP 12K is very interesting. Do you really think they can't do a similar sensor adequately in a lower resolution?

Not bad for their very first attempt!

I believe there was an update for the autofocus already improving it a bit. All I will say is I am happy with how useable it seems to be. Sure it isn't the best but the camera sure has other things going for it. This year is an exciting year for cameras it seems and I'm glad I was waiting to upgrade. Now to see what else gets announced (I'm looking at you sony fx6).

Leica is using mostly Sony sensors and guts these days. But their color science and lenses in combination create a unique non-Sony look.
