Red Flare?

You can buy Optical Flares from VideoCopilot.net

Probably shot with an anamorphic lens. Don't think about getting one if your on a small budget. They cost thousands. The effect can be done easily in a compositing program like After Effects.

The video definitely goes the lens route. Other giveaways like the oval bokeh are present, particularly noticeable in the out of focus lighting. Good anamorphics start from $1500+ at the cheap end of the scale. There are plenty of (imperfect) affordable lens solutions available but the trade off is that they take some practice to use, face severe compromises (like no rack focus, vignetting, ridiculous stretch factor etc). In either case if you want artist control of your flares it will require quite a bit of time spent setting up to get the framing, blocking and position of the lights just so.

They are worth checking out if you want the whole anamorphic look but if you just want the flares, go with the plugin. Expect to buy half a dozen anamorphics before you find the one you are looking for. There is little information to be had and ultimately you really need to get your hands on one before any of it makes much sense. Most people buy a useless one off the bat but frankly I think a worthwhile lesson is learnt in the process. I just bought my sixth anamorphic and there's still a couple out there I want to try out (ironically the cheapest one I bought performs the best). Then there's the need for clamps, adapters and such so in the end the cheap options are still likely to cost you $1000+.

If you just want the flares then at the expense of a little naturalism you can be a lot more creatively dictatorial with plugins and you're not stuck with the results if you change your mind. Some even prefer the look of the fake flares, you could say the plugin tends to look more futuristic, the lens tends to look more retro. Whether by lens or plugin it is far too easy to overuse and abuse flares, particularly with plugins where you can go to town in post (although you can undo if you recognise your own poor taste in time!). With plugins the flares don't even need to be motivated by existing lighting but will look better if they are. There were a lot of bling-style hip hop videos a few years ago where it has been used to the extent of being the visual equivalent of autotune abuse (both akin to self abuse!)

But flares are cool to those of us who think they are! ;P

You can fake a lens flare so it looks like it has been done on camera with some simple compositing. No need for expensive lenses.
