Red cut prices on Epic by about $2k

That's to accommodate the new Epic X Dragon that'll be 24K (the Epic M Dragon is 31K and for people that want it now) - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?97869-NAB13-Dragon-Sensor-Upgrade-Program-begins/page6

Basically, an Epic X Dragon is 24K if you wait, $9.5K if you upgrade an Epic or $31K if you get an 'M' version..

There's a lot of interesting stuff coming.

The Dragon looks to be very good on released specs, but no footage yet.

However, the Red Motion Mount is a new PL mount with built in electronic ND and global shutter is the most interesting... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?97868-NAB13-RED-MOTION-MOUNT - wonder if it can go on an Epic or just a Dragon.

kinda expensive when compared to BMCC 4K version...

Very different cameras with different markets I think. More of an answer from Red to Sony's global shutter.

I don't think the BMCC 4K is ND as well (going off to check specs now :) - but the idea of an electronic ND that can be controlled as pat of the menu system is really useful.

I plan on getting a 4K BMPC for budget purposes, but a dragon shooting up to 100FPS at 6K, that's really impressive. The drop in price for the mysterium is nice too. The gent at Red in Hollywood said they would upgrade Epic Ms, then Epic Xs, then start delivering the new cameras probably around July-ish. Since the current Epic X is $5k less than the Epic M, that puts an Epic x with side ssd and lens mount around $26k for a 6K camera...with batteries, storage, and an after market viewfinder and monitor, around $31-32K. Half the price of a 2K Alexa and higher quality. Not too shabby. That should be future proofed for 6-8 years easy, maybe more.
I can't wait to see some footage. I do think that Scarlet is toast though, the BMPC will crush it if they can get the product to market trouble free this time. Canon and Nikon need to go back to the drawing boards as well.

They have also announced an upgrade path for Scarlet either to Scarlet Dragon - 5K up to 60FPS with the same DR and ISO sensitivity of Epic Dragon, OR an upgrade from Scarlet to an Epic MX.

Agreed. BlackMagic had brought us the Red Scarlet we thought we were getting (some years back), and they did it at the price point we'd expected. The higher end Reds have their slice and now, so does BlackMagic . . . Everybody wins!

Kinda surprised, given a years notice (when BM stunned everyone last NAB) that nobody took the initiative to compete in this arena. Very disappointed that Panasonic didn't . . . But not feeling so bad any longer about parting company with my AF100 some weeks back. Got nothing bad to say about the AF100, as it served me well and paid for itself many times over.

But back to price . . . glad to see the effects of technology and smart engineering putting some downward pressure on Red (and hopefully others soon to follow, as it's the intelligent play).

Regarding the cracks in other threads about BM being able to deliver, I think that ship has pretty much sailed . . . My guess is, barring a tsunami we'll be seeing BM product in reasonable supply well before Labor Day. I guess time will tell?

Based on what? Their original camera announced a year ago is still backordered everywhere... and BMD says in interviews they are still focused on getting those out first... Plus they may very well underestimate the difference in demand for a $4k 4k global shutter or 13stop $1k product...

Gotta say, as a FS700 and Scarlet owner I am pleasantly surprised with the options and what appear to be announcements that will give brand new life to my cameras and certainly push demand and reverse depreciation somewhat. Only problem is I don't need two 4k RAW cameras with high speed capabilities... do I choose ease of use and price or dynamic range?

The reason for the BMCC seems pretty flukey and not likely to happen again, IMO. What are the odds that something like a bad batch of sensor covering glass making it past QC at two different companies before getting caught BM's QC will happen again?

I agree. From what I understand, the sensor glass was the only thing holding up production; everything else was ready to go. I highly doubt that with all the lessons learned from the original BMCC there will be many (if any) production delays. Could be wrong though.

RED and Blackmagic have a lot in common. They desire to make innovative products that dont get to market on time, but when they do they blow peoples minds.

Well, having set up their booth right next to BlackMagic might have also helped a bit

What are RED doing down in the Post Production arena? I get why BMD are there given that most of their products are Post related, but shouldn't RED have been in the Main Hall with all the camera manufacturers? Its like they're keeping an eye on them or something....!

Interesting to see that the biggest booths are the Japanese giants Sony & Canon in the Acquisition and Production Hall, but the Cameras that are generating all the buzz this year are in a small booth in the Post Production Hall....
