Red Carpet Mic Suggestions?

Hey all,
I'm shooting a red carpet event tonight in Hollywood for a friend. As soon as the sound rental houses open up, I'm going to call to rent a mic for the evening. Just hoping someone had a suggestion for a good hand-held or the right question to ask the rental house to make sure I'm getting what I'll need.

If I run wireless, am I going to have an issue with the other news outlets that are there? Should I just go XLR into the camera?

Thanks in advance.

See if the rental house offers a Sennheiser MD46. It has a little more reach than a standard handheld dynamic. Listen to the Jerry Hoffman interview link - that is with a Sennheiser Evolution SKP100 plug on transmitter.

Make sure to record sound with the on-camera mic at the same time, on a different channel, for atmosphere.

I figured talent would wear a lav so the mic didn't have to go back and forth. Should I record with a shotgun instead on ch2?

If you can get a lav for the host then I'd go for that, especially if talent isn't an experienced host. Safety first.

You could roll some atmosphere with the on-camera mic during down time and mix it in during post. You don't have to rent a shotgun for that though, since you will likely end up using it lower and that makes a bad built-in mic sound "better". Make sure to get a nice level for the atmosphere though, and that will make it sound best when mixed down. And ff course, do not forget to switch back to the proper channels if you are switching inputs for atmosphere.
