Red Bull gives you wings.

I've seen some question in the forum as to the artistic presentation of mixed format footage in one piece i.e. 4:3 SD and 16:9 HD. When presented with using mutiple footage formats - mostly found in documentary or news film pieces - I take all of my SD footage, drop it into a 1080p or 720p P2 timeline, twice so there are two copies. The bottom layer gets stretched to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio with a camera blur added to it. The top layer is then adjusted so the full 4:3 frame is visible, which preserves the integrity of the shot. When using color it works best to add a drop shadow to the 4:3 or top layer to lower the intensity of the "wings." Then, when you are done standardizing all of your footage you can export the timeline to one 1080p or 720p reel which than can then be flown into your final timeline with no adjustments being need to properly place the SD footage with the HD footage. It can give a sense of uniformity to your project, as well.

This piece film is two pieces of old TV footage, one black & white, the other in color. You'll also note that at the end of the piece of film that YouTube has suggested other examples of videos containing wings.
