Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

Let the Fan Club get all the Scarlets coming out so they can finally have something in their hands to play with. After all the bugs start popping up and fixes made, as the usual process goes, we will see what comes out of them. If you are ok with getting bologna instead of real meat then go ahead and be happy with a 2/3" sensor. This Scarlet saga has been one of the wackiest on american product development and manufacturing I've ever seen in my 50 years on this earth. And I lived thru the De Lorean extravaganza. Nov 3 will be a historic day! :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

I have no problem with Scaret having a 2/3" sensor and a fixed lens. I'm sure the images it creates will be fine. Plus, the codec should be great.
But it's always kind of creepy reading some of the postings at the RED site. Talk about a cult.

Well if the Scarlet is 2/3" that makes things simple - I won't be getting it.

I absolutely agree that there's a place for 2/3" cameras, but the space the F3s FS100s and AF100s are competing in is a different one to 2/3" capture.

I get a feeling that both announcements might end up out of the price bracket of 95% of the people getting hyped about this.

Totally.

I found out from a reliable source what Canon and RED are announcing. They got wind of this retro/vintage equipment craze and they've developed cameras that record to betamax. No transcoding issues, no mud, no compression artifacts. Analogue tape rules! It's gonna be huge, and lets face it the red disciples will buy whatever Jim deems them worthy of buying.

Uh-oh I just got myself redlisted.

I guess I am the one unusual RED owner. I like the camera, it makes money for me. However, I do not love it. I thinks there are plenty of things that are wrong or quirky with the cameras. To be honest if it were up to me I would use my AF-100 more. It is far better thought out and with a menu system that is simple to navigate. But alas, clients more often than not will ask for and pay for the RED. What does this tell me? This; RED has done an amazing job of spreading the mantra "only on RED".

I am blessed with living in a place that still doesn't really care for sensor size, and not many people (very few only one guy I know did it) started using a sensor size to make a decision. I like 2/3rds. I blow focus less. I can still get shallow, but can use the thing myself.

I don't see the problem being 2/3rds of an inch. I just wonder how fast that fixed lens is. I much prefer the lens options out there for 16mm PL than using a still L series lens for example. I dunno, so many things on 16mm there I don't think 1 2/3rds camera is 'disqualified' immediately for motion picture making.

Does anyone know how fast the glass is? I mean if we're speculating, which is exactly what's going on, any clue as to the kit lens' speed? I think that would make a difference.

If the 35mm equivalent is a max aperture of f1:3 with that redcode, then I'd take it if the price was right (under 10K) and never stop down below f4. I don't anyway, those days are long over. I see less and less the need for that big a chip, m43, apsc etc.

People are talking like 2/3rds is the future (some comfort anyone?)... the large sensor revolution just started!

I hope they've abandoned the 2/3 Scarlet. After using larger sensor size dslr's for the past few years the last thing I want to do is go back in sensor size. When it was announced 2/3 made total sense since it was before the 5D/7D/GH craze took hold, but now it just seems like a completely outdated concept. And with the cost of accessories to get a working Red camera together it's a hard sell to have to invest thousands into a system with a limited use. How many films are shot in 2/3? Why go backwards?

I think it's kind of silly that they are competing with Canon on November 3rd, but hey, this is Red. They like a fight when it comes to the other big camera companies.

I expect Red to announce a S35 camera Scarlet. I have no proof of this but it seems clear that with Canon announcing their own big chip camera, a 2/3 chip wouldn't be that groundbreaking. Also, I love it that Red is doing it on Nov 3 and sticking it to Canon. The only way to shut them up is to build a better camera.

I think it may turn into a role reversal... with Canon releasing a 2/3" 4K system and RED launching an s35 3K or 4K system.

If this turns out to be true... I think Canon might actually do very well out of it

So Jannard is now a Shrinking Violet and Canon is the blow-hard? That's good stuff right there.

I think it's excellent news, and if Canon also announces a ( next gen) cam, it will be even better.

I think it is silly that some people are trash-talking this camera before its specs are even known. The fact of the matter is that RED is only having and going to continue to have a positive effect on us, the consumers. Competition is good. Newcomers that have impressive gear with impressive prices compared to their Alexa, Sony, Panasonic etc.. counterparts is very good.

Also, people all of the sudden hate 2/3 inch sensors? The DVX100 had 1/3 inch sensors and some pretty good stuff was shot on those... I remember when the Sony EX1 and EX3 came out and how impressed people were with the "larger" sensor. The EX1 still needed a 35mm adapter to get great DOF but that wasn't as much the case with the EX3 because it took interchangeable lenses and could utilize large aperture primes. 2/3's is obviously larger than the EX3's 1/2" chip. In fact, 2/3 inch is not that far off from the size of 16 mm film which has been used to produce some amazing work and continues to be used by a select few in Hollywood. There are times when larger chips are preferable but other times when it's not. I personally think the S35 chip is a good compromise from the 5DMKii's enormous sensor and the 1/3" sensors so many of us were forced to shoot on for so long b/c of budgets. That being said 2/3 inch may prove to be a great size to use with fast primes.

I'm not a RED fanboy by any means but I am glad for the industry that they are around and I am interested (maybe even a little excited) to see what offerings the Scarlet brings us.
