Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

Its interesting, I actually believe it now. Red really has had an overhaul of how they handle product announcements. Other than a couple of little odds and ends (Redvolts, side handles, and redmotes) having some awkward bumps, they really have done a good job of announcing products, shipping products, and not being stuck in an endless cycle of taking orders and going to backorder.

Looking forward to the moment when the "buy now" button goes live on the Red Store. Also looking forward to doing the same when Epic-X gets to normal availability as I'll be buying one of those as well to go along with my Red One and Scarlet.

There is something to that date (maybe I'm wrong). Are they going head to head with Canon's announcement? Not saying it means ANYTHING....but that is an interesting move there. Congrats Red Camera Co. Best of luck! Thanks for bringing RAW video to the table.

I think this lends a lot of credence to the speculation that Canon is announcing a video camera at their Hollywood event, and it is probably something that goes directly in the Scarlet/Epic S price range.

Fun fun!

Wait... I thought Scarlet was officially dead and it was now called Epic S... what is going on? Of course I haven't been refreshing RedUser.net constantly for the last year, so I may have missed something about the naming evolution of this camera.

Jim pretty much just said, yeah, they are announcing this to go head to head with Canon.

Amusingly, this has actually made me far more interested in seeing what Canon has on tap than what Red does with Scarlet. We kinda know what we are getting with Scarlet, its mostly about the details like package/price/ship date. Canon could be doing anything between 1080p S35 and 4k FF. Who knows!

Scarlet at last we were told was 3k 2/3rds in fixed and interchangeable, the S35 sensor'd Scarlet was bumped up into the Epic line as the Epic-s. In their recent "Roadmap" thread, the Epic-S was completely absent and Scarlet was not listed as two different models (fixed and interchangeable). From what they have said in these threads tonight, expect that Scarlet is different in a fairly significant way. My guess? Pretty much a direct replacement of the Red One in the new modular system. 4k, S35, under $20k.

Will be very interesting to see what happens here. It would be very interesting to see something like a full-frame/vistavision 1080p camera from Canon up against a 4k S35mm offering from Red.

I'd probably opt for the larger sensor in that case, unless the Red offered substantially higher framerate options.

Bloody hell it's an exciting time for camera technology. First the AF100, then the F3, then the FS100 - the options in affordable gear that shoots beautiful pictures are huge.

+100000000....

Some of us will also include the HX9, the NEX5N, the hacked GH2, and the humble little hacked T2i. :) (What would you have done with one of those 5 years ago?) :)

Scarlet was never "dead". They just rebranded it that Scarlet means 2/3" sensors, and the larger-sensor model (formerly the Scarlet S35) was moved into the Epic lineup, as the so-called Epic S.

Scarlet, last we knew, includes a fixed-lens model and an interchangeable model, both using 2/3"-sized sensors.

Oh!

Well this is now very interesting.

I find it strange for Red to be touting 2/3" cameras, especially if targeting the F3, FS100, DSLR, and AF100 crowd. If there has been a common denominator between all of these cameras, it's been 1080p (some form or another) and big sensors (4/3"- S35mm/APS-C- FF).

Who knows what they will reveal, but I would be curious to see how all of these DSLR users mature. Will they go for resolution and deeper depth of field, or will they cling to their big chips at 1080p. Interesting indeed.

I think its more like dynamic range and good codec vs. 1080p, s35 dof and long GOP codecs (avchd / h264)

but they also said specs were changing

Wouldn't that have meant the end of ScarletUser.com?

I've never been to that website. It's as relevant to me as friendster. Is that still around?

Yeah. That is what I find interesting. DSLR crowd seem to really not care about crap compression and horrible codecs... they just love that shallow depth of field. Many of these same people were the ones drooling over Scarlet. This seems to be the line in the sand. I'm curious to see where the crowd goes. Of course there will be an audience for both cameras... I'm just curious what the vast majority will pick.

By aligning the announcement date with Canon's, they have really set the stage for the showdown.

This (the announcement date) is plain cringe worthy.

RED should be celebrating the fact they they have just launched a fantastic camera (Epic) yet they are more concerned with trying to rain on the competition's parade. (even though Canon have never and might never compete on the same target market)

"Jim Jannard is going head-to-head with Canon with a major announcement November 3. He's throwing around combat/war metaphors so look out"

"Does this mean that Ann-Margret is not coming?" ....

They said they were gonna stop saying they're gonna do stuff, and anonunce when the stuff is done. A thread that reads Scarlet and shipping announcement should include a date and a price no? I think RED are still in the same mindset they've been in, and this takes away from that 'sorry we keep saying stuff' thread earlier.

Again, yes the camera is good, etc, but no date? no specs? as with post #2 an announcement of an announcement.
