Recs on post houses for mpeg2 encoding

Hey all,

It's time for me to compress my short film and put it on a DVD. I'd like to use something better than iDVD for encoding. I'd like to take it to a post house to have them do a hardware encode, just for better quality. Then I'll take the mpeg 2 and audio files and use DVD SP to author. And then I'll bring my master for DVD replication - but probably wouldn't be the same place.

Anybody have any recs on good affordable places that do mpeg II encoding?

I'd prefer if it's LA, but recs in other states also helpful.

Thanks!
Bill

Have you tried the Bitvise encoder from www.innobits.com. It's pretty good. And my guess is, for the price you'll pay to get the software, you may not be able to get the encoding done for any cheaper than that and you'll get to use the software over and over. Once you figure out the right bitrate for the video, the results are very good. They have a demo available for download.

iDVD does a good job but you have less control over settings. Essentially you have good quality as long as you are under 60 minutes and lower quality if you are over 60 minutes. In Bitvise you can control bitrate as well as control video noise, etc. A lot of people like Compressor which comes with Final Cut Studio. Quality is much improved over previous MPEG2 encoding within FCP.
