Recs on crappy dv camera as deck?

It's time for me to buy a little $300 cheapo dv camera to use as a deck for capture and laying back. Also potentially rca outs into my ntsc monitor for viewing as I cut/color correct.

Any recommendations? Should I get a panasonic one to ensure better compatibility with my dvx (avoid potential problems where it won't play a tape shot on my dvx)? Does it matter? Anything else I should know?

Sweet.
Thanks.

A lot of people here recommend the Canon ZR series, becuase it is one of the cheapest.

Yea, I've used the canon's to capture with no problem. Although one time I did try to capture a tape recorded in DVCAM format and it turned out funny, but other than that they work fine....cheap too (around 300 bucks)

HELP!  DV deck not reading TC!

HELP!  DV deck not reading TC!

Thanks, guys. I should have taken your advice.

It was between the canon ZR series and the panny gs9 or gs12 and i went with the gs12 because i wanted to be able to use my panny batteries. And now the damb thing can't read time code on some of the tapes. It read time code on 1 of the 3 different tapes I tried.

This really sucks. I can't capture into FCP without time code. FCP won't let me capture as a non controllable device for some reason.

And I dont want to try to capture the footage with my dvx because it's a panasonic tape and I've been using only sony wet tapes since I got it.

Any ideas? Is it time for me to suck it up and go buy the canon zr80?

Help please
Bill

Well Bill, go with the zr80, you won't run into any more problems.

I've used my wifes as a deck (a zr90), and it works perfectly.

It's also a good little camera.

Thanks pookie. Sigh. I guess the dvx gods were punishing me for not listening to my fellow dvxer's advice.
I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Re: Recs on crappy dv camera as deck?

If I remember correctly Bill, the only differences between the 80 and 90 are the 90 takes stills to a card, and it comes with a wide angle lens (it's not a zoom through though), so unless you want stills, go for the 80 and save some money.
