Recreating the sounds of "Lincoln"

Nice. A lot of times when you hear sound folks talking "authentic" sounds it's kind of BS. But Ben does get into the subtle reality of the the sounds. Of course he also tries to sneak a Wilhelm scream into all his films someplace ;~)

In a lot of BTS video and or articles you will hear folks talking about recording the "right" guns or the "exact same XYZ" for the authenticity. What they fail to mention is that while it's fun to record and it's always nice to know what the real thing sounds like it's almost never what you end up hearing. A classic one is Terminator 2. That weird grenade gun thing that Arnie is shooting is a real device. They spent a small fortune recording the real thing (it's a military only device and so getting that all worked out is complicated and those shells are $$$$). Then in the mix Cameron just didn't think it sounded "right" so they kept add ing and making it bigger. In the end the main sound is a howitzer. I'm sure there is an article someplace talking about all the expense they went to to record the "authentic" weapon.

I suspect that Ben actually used the "real" recordings and didn't "tart them up" too much. They are part of the story so they may well be manipulated to "play" their part better but I suspect that if you heard the original recordings you would recognize them in the film.

Great treat. Thanks for sharing it. That is a splendid movie and it's great to hear from the sound designer and how much trouble they went to. I love the BTS stuff!
