Recreating THE RING's creature effect

Rapier, why do I want motion blur other than for that head shaking bit? If I want a very staccato (sp? music/sound term) feel to it, don't I want to AVOID motion blur?

yes you would. I didn't get what you were wanting. for that look you would definately want the higher shutter speed. Just be mindfull you will need more light.

I misunderstood what you were aiming for. You should try the interlaced trick though, it does look really cool.

Of course as long as you moved smoothly, you could cut down on blur as well.

Sorry bout that, I misunderstood that you were wanting the strobe tight clear effect.

Envision, I'm about to try this effect. I'll post the results when I'm done. But I have 3 questions. What's supersampling, how do you apply motion blur to just the head, and the most important... when you sped up the footage, did you go into clip properties and disable resample or did you leave smart resample on?

Thanks!

I honestly don't know the difference between "disable resample" and "smart resample", etc., so I didn't touch any of that. I should go to the help menu & read up on it.

I DID go into the clip properties & selected 4x playback ... then went inserted a velocity envelope & set it at 250%, so I could have playback at 10x (1,000%).

Supersampling is another envelope option you can insert on the master video bus track. Read up on it to learn more, but basically it helps smooth out the motion blur. What ever you set it at will be about how much longer it'll take to render that section, in my experience (i.e. set it at level 3, and it takes 3x times longer to render).

I didn't apply motion blur to just the head, in this case. I just kept my body VERY still as I moved my head back & forth. Otherwise, you'd want to create a separate video track, then use the bezier mask to only have the area you're wanting to show the effect on (i.e. mask around the head, using a little feathering in the mask).

For the Sci-Fi fest, I'm looking forward to seeing just how much of the FX I can do well within Vegas (won't be doing this effect, but trying some new stuff).
