Recreating short film. Need help.

The DP said he used:

at 44 sec:
- from outside 2.5hmi pointing up to white bounce (2m by 1m). bounce pointing down. bounch also outside
- kino flo 120 4 bank top with diffuse over it for toplight
- rosco lite panel kit for profile to add contrast/shadow

0:54-1:10 and 2:37-2:48:
- just a kino flo on top


My school only has tungsten lights available to rent out. What can I use/do to achieve the same look if I don't have kino flos/hmis. Also, is a 2.5k watt tungsten light equivalent to a 2.5kHMI?

This would be much easier if the DoP had given you the foot candles either measured or calculated incident on the subjects in the scene.

Then you could find the spec for the lights you have and determine how much of what would be needed.

Absent that, finding out which brand and type of HMI's and if it is one of the standard pro brands, then their specs will give some indication of delivered light power at various distances. Then compare that to what you can find out about the tungstens you have through the school.

For example, Kino Flo for a 4 bank 4' setup, yields 84 fc at 6 feet, and 49 fc at 8 feet.

For an ARRI 2.5K HMI Fresnel gives 1053 fc at 40 feet with a 7 deg wide setting. Since this is bounced there will be loss from the bounce and bouncing from outside in, may entail more than 40 feet...
