Recreating "Gelly Thick Plastic" distortion effect

Bag of Douche
Hey - there's this static-x music video (I know, I know, calm down) where an effect is used that warps the image in an interesting way...

www.static-x.com

(Video is under media, called Start A War, it's small so you might need to zoom in)

I was trying to recreate this with sapphire filters (S-Distort, and S-DistortBlur, overlapped on each other with 65% opacity)

This is what I came up with

However, it still doesn't feel like I'm seeing the image through some gel, it feels like the image is just cheaply distorted...

Thanks guys

An old technique to get that smeared/soft look is to smear some vaseline onto a filter infront of your lens (maybe an old UV or something). This is in production, not post though. In post, play around with displacement maps instead of distorts. This should help a bit.

Well I did use a displacement map as a reference guide for the filter - however it still doesn't look "right" it just looks distorted via a displacement map... the one I used looks like this:

Make an animated mask...jus really displace alot of it in weird directions and then use the displacement map or something in post.

I think the key thing is to jus have it moving...because i noticed a few parts of the video on that bands site...during the video the effect seems to trail off kinda and smudge it..if you jus animate the mask to something like that..then it should maybe be something like the video.

How exactly would one go about creating an animated displacement map?

(I suck at this stuff :( )

Use fractal noise can get all kinds of cool displacement maps with its paramaters and its an extrmely versatile effect to learn.

The displacement map above looks good but has too many hard edges. Try blurring it a little which will give it a smoother transition from distorted to non-distorted.
