I am the DP for my lighting class this friday in which I have to recreate a lighting scheme out of a movie in the studio. My lighting assignment is "visual effects" and we have to shoot on 16mm with B&W film.

I'm doing the "Contender" scene from On the Waterfront as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeVq1e6JKlw

I'm trying to figure out the best way to recreate the passing car effect in this scene and I was wondering if anyone here could give some advice? There are definitely a lot of different patterns of light that go by throughout the scene so I was thinking the best option would be some sort of drum kit?

I don't have much experience in this so any 2 cents anyone could add here would be very helpful and appreciative.

Thanks!

Get a hand held spotlight, have someone moving the spot, and have some of the crew with material that would look like poles, road structures, etc. move through the beam, as the beam moves across the actors.

The example shot was in B&W, so there was no real need to worry about the 'color' of the light...
