Recovery from being dumb

Ok, I wanted to save a little space on my HD for a project. Doing so, I deleted some rendered files and captured files from previous projects. Now from doing that, some Final Cut Pro Movies wouldnt work and turn to static. I screwed myself over.
HOwever, I do have a DVD copy of those previous works.

Is there anyway to recover them either from my HD? DVD? tricks of the trade?
Thanks

Re: Recovery from being dumb

There is a program called HandBrake which extracts the video files off of a DVD. It can do pretty good quality rips, but you won't get back the original quality.

TechTools has a deleted data recovery tool (thanks Cap'n for turning me on to that program). But I'm not sure how/how well it works. Might be worth a shot if quality is an issue.

Otherwise, give Handbrake a try. I've used it a long time ago, don't really remember the quality.

Don't you have the tapes? Can you recapture the clips from the project files?

That would be the best way to go. I bet you saved your movies as non-self contained. Man, I've done that a zillion times. Stack those puppies up on a FW drive and you think you're good to go for a million years.

Yikes... OH... and never captured with timecode?

Data recovery works very well in Tech Tools -- just so long as you didn't do too much before you tried to recover them. OSX tends to write little files all over the place when ever it seems it wants to... just to mess with you I think. If it is on drives OTS - other than system you should be fine.

Good luck,

Well lets just say I can find the tapes. Would it be possible to recapture them exactly the way it was set in the timeline? Like an offline edit? I appreciate the help guys... if you need any help in medieval warfare reenactment and hand to hand combat, come to me.

Halloween 08 and 11 if the gamma is ok to see. The little one is SO into knights.

Anyway -- yes, a recapture right off the sequence. Create an offline from the sequence and then batch capture. There is a little bug in FCP that sometimes won't let you batch capture just the clips. I just started bugging me this week. Haven't had any problems with it before.

Let me know if you really want to do this and I'll work aggressively to figure out the work around.
