recording voice track in Soundtrack Pro

I want to record my voice for narration clips in Soundtrack Pro and export them to use in Final Cut Pro. At first, Final Cut did not recognize the AIFF file, so I changed the file type to an MP3. Final Cut recognized the MP3 and I can edit the clip in the preview window. But when I try to drop the clip into my timeline/sequence, my voice has been replaced by some sort of generated beeping sounds. Very strange. Any clues or help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what version of final cut you are running, but if you click on the top tool bar under tools, you should be able to click voice over tool and do voice overs in final cut.

MP3's are not Final Cut Friendly. You probably need to render the mp3's in order to be able to listen to them on the timeline.

Are you sure you exported AIFF's from Soundtrack? Final Cut doesn't have any problems with 48hz 16 bit aiff files. Sometimes in order to get out of Soundtrack you need to go to save as, click on audio file then set it up to work on the final cut timeline. Then save as a new audio file. Sometimes directly exporting isn't a proper option.

The beeping audio is an indication that your audio track doesn't match the sequence settings and needs to get rendered.

AIFF and MP3 are not the same thing. FCP recognizes MP3, but you need to render it (and re-render each time you make a change or move the audio track, unless you do an Item Level audio render - but that's another topic).

FCP should recognize your AIFF files. Make sure your STP project settings are correct before you record. In the Preferences, under Project, make sure it's set to 48 kHz sampling rate and 16 or 24-bit. Double check that the audio you've already recorded uses these settings. In STP, click on the audio item and look at the properties field in the Details tab.

After you've done recording, you can right click on the recorded track and select Reveal in Finder. This will navigate you directly to the recorded track and you should be able to use it in FCP.

However if you do any further editing in STP (adding fades, filters, other audio tracks, etc..) then you need to export the STP project itself (render it to a file) using File > Export. In the dialog that appears again make sure that you are exporting as AIFF with 48 kHz sampling rate and 16 or 24-bit.

If however you've opened the file as an audio file project, then you can just use the project file itself or use Save As to convert it to an AIFF. Just don't forget to use Process > Render to Action to make sure all the real-time filters you've used are applied to the file (again rendered) otherwise they won't take effect in FCP.

Also double check that your sequence settings in FCP are correct: 48 kHz at 16 or 24-bit. Check it on an open sequence using Sequence > Settings and look at the Audio Settings.
