Recording to a Hard Drive

My apologies if this has been discussed to death, but I'm new here, so I get a pass, right?

Anyway, I'm curious if it is possible to record straight from the dvx to a firewire hard drive. If so, please describe the details.

Thanks.

in the forum or on the web?

okay, I just checked it out. is there a solution for mac users? do you always have to record through a laptop?

Re: Recording to a Hard Drive

Nope. have to have a computer inbetween, either a dedicated computer (running an NLE or DV Rack or something like that) or an all-in-one solution like the FireStore or QuickCapture.

Re: Recording to a Hard Drive

okay. thanks. so it's just tapes transfered to the computer at the end of the day....

Re: Recording to a Hard Drive

Well, with a Firestore or similar, or a laptop with DV Rack, you can eliminate the tape entirely if you want to.

Re: Recording to a Hard Drive

So, could I record straight into a laptop with final cut pro? Would the resulting image quality be better than from tape to hard drive?

Same image quality, but no chance of drop-outs.  At least, that's the theory.

Do you really want to lug an expensive, temperamental and somewhat-fragile Powerbook around with you?

Re: Recording to a Hard Drive

Just want to see what the options are. Initially I hoped to connect a LaCie 360 gig firewire drive straight to the camera, but obviously that doesn't work.

If you want to record directly to hard disk, and still have mobility, then you'd probably be wiser to investigate the hitherto-mentioned solutions.
(I'm talking about something like the Quickstream or Firestore, not the DVRack)

FWIW, I've seen a couple of these units in action, and was not convinced of the design, functionality or robustness of either.

Then again, it's early days yet, and the HD-as-recorder idea certainly makes alot of sense.  'Bout time Apple got on the case! ;)
