Recording smartphone video signal while video chatting/streaming - Possible?

I am trying to figure out if, using a smartphone, my client can record video of himself (capturing the highest quality footage the phone has to offer) while simultaneously streaming that signal so that I can monitor and direct him remotely. I know that this can be done with the BlackMagic Web Presenter and Atem Mini, but I'm trying to keep this to a minimal setup -- the people on camera will not be from production backgrounds.

I have an inquiry out the folks at OpenReel, but from what I've gathered, they're probably well above my client's budget.

Your ideas are appreciated!

I'd love a solution like this, i've been doing a lot of guided recordings for clients. What we end up doing is getting someone on their end to log into a zoom on a seperate device so that we can see what's going on but obviously it's not the same as a virtual client monitor.

If you can find a video recording app that can record in the background, then theoretically you could have that person be on a zoom call on the same device.

This is a slightly different application but for the instances in past few years where we have needed to have an actor shooting on an iPhone while providing a monitoring output to director's monitors, I use the Apple AV adaptor out to an HDMI transmitter. For this the transmitter would be swapped for an input device to a computer (Blackmagic Mini Recorder etc) and then OBS or other software used. A lot of extra hardware for sure.

It seems that recording on the phone ties up a lot of the resources, so streaming out at same time maybe tricky. Certainly I saw issues trying to do this with Airplay, but that was a few generation of phones back.

The challenge I am facing is that the client wants to capture an interaction between two people who are having a video conference so it's really important that they be looking at each other. I could put the laptop above and behind the recording "webcam" but it's an awful lot to set up for a non-production person. OpenReel looks great, but may be more than my client wants to pay.

Thanks, Charles. Hadn't considered the Apple AV Adapter. I wonder if I could find a way to hide the other meeting participants (I would be one) and then just record to an external recorder via said adapter.

After some research, I'm leaning towards plugging a Canon mirrorless camera into an iPad via a CamLink, or by using Canon's new Webcam Utility Beta. Both would be on a tripod. Talent would tune into a Zoom meeting on the iPad with audio going to a wireless Airpod worn by the talent so that it wouldn't be picked up by the lav, or the shotgun mic on top of the mirrorless cam.

All of this x2. And I'd actually want Canon's readouts in the live stream. I'll need to test and troubleshoot but it should be doable.
