Recording Roland Piano into DVX100A

Hello, I'm trying to record direct from a output line on the back of a Roland 200sx digital piano into my DVX100A via an XLR cable. I get sound, but it's poor quality and lots of noise. Is the Mic/Line setting the problem?
I want to find out before I try it again, since the piano isn't mine (limited access and all that)
The Piano also has MIdi in and out female jacks, a Phones jack and a USB port. Thanks for any ideas, including using a mixer - CRaig

most sound mixing professionals frown on going directly from a source such as a piano to a mic line on a recorder. the impedances are all wrong. more than likely your driving out of a built in preamp. it will work, but it suffers from short lifetime on the equipment and poor quality(buzz, lack of headroom).

i would recommend feeding the signal thru a sound mixer board.

im just flipping thru the Yamaha Sound Reinforcment Handbook and they recommend using an impedance converter in lu of a sound mixer board if you dont have one.

is the XLR input

is the XLR input

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but is the XLR input the only way to get audio from an external mixing board into the camera --- thanks in advance for the education.

I got around testing this (well, almost the same). I connected my son's Roland Phantom Xa synth straight to DVX100 mic inputs, from Roland line out to mic in, camera's switches in line position, of course. With output (volume) in max and camera sound level input pots at almost max the levels were perfect and sound clear.

DVX100 has line inputs (mic inputs with switches at "line" position), I can not see a reason why a normal line level input should be a problem, tht's what these line/mic inputs are for also. Line out signal from an electric piano that is normally connected to PA system or home stereo RCA jacks is a line signal, or a good approximation, yes?

For me it worked. Are your connectors at fault?

Yeah, The piano is connected to a Roland outside speaker, but I was using head phones to to listen. I'll try the Line setting on the Line/Mic switch first then if that doesn't work go for the impedance matching transformer. Thanks Petrus and adderx99 - Craig

Is the line to the roland speaker a line level line or is it a normal speaker line? It the later, I would not connet it to a camera, as it could burn everything.

Mic signal is really weak, line level signal is "medium", speaker signal can approach normal wall AC strangth!!!

There should be a "line out" jack on the piano, unless it is a realy cheap one.

I would bypass the DVX altogether and use the MIDI out to record MIDI data onto the computer. Then you can just load up whatever samples you want, and even tweak the performance later if needed.
