Recording loud live sound?

Yesterday I was recording a big christmas party, but the sound was so loud it was recorded distorted. I had the luck that I have used a line level input from the DJ mixtable, so I got one good track of sound.

I am using the AT897 shotgun mic, can't I record levels that loud with that mic? Or is there a other method for recording loud live sound? Settings etc?

Re: Recording loud live sound?

the problem is not with your mike - the problem is firder - in your preamp section - if you are going to recorsd lowd scens , just add atununarator befor the input , 10-15 db would be enouth , you can manege it inside your cable or just add barrel
check your camera settings , it might be you was on -60 db on mike input , thats another 10 db of gain befor ato d converter, usially use the -50 the 60 for dynamic mikes

Re: Recording loud live sound?

I have checked the camera allready before shooting, the setting for the mic where -50db.

Is a attenuator some plug with settings I can put between the mic cable and the dvx-100?

Re: Recording loud live sound?

For $399 that Campressor seems like a very nice piece of kit. Do you use one Oleg?

Re: Recording loud live sound?

no - thats a tool for one man band - iasm playing the chelo in the orcestar a , and some times involve in trio or qwartet
but never do one man show on the street :-)
my thingers are still fast enouth on the faders

I think I give the Attenuator a try. It is way cheaper then the compressor and if it works with loud sound, than its good!

Re: Recording loud live sound?

I'm using an AT 4073a shotgun and I have to keep the levels down really low or the sound distorts. I can't set the audio levels over 2 on the 9 point scale. I have the mic gain at -50db but still often ride close to peaking in interviews. I was advised by the person I bought the mic from to use a pad. He said it's like an ND filter for audio. Anyone else out there with this problem? Or anyone successfully using a pad? What is the cost? Who are the manufacturers? Do they come in various dbs?

Re: Recording loud live sound?

I have a 4073a and use a 10 db pad (attenuator) around loud music. As Oleg said, it can overload the mic preamp on the DVX and clip no matter where you set your audio levels. I keep a pair of these in my bag:

It sure would be nice if the DVX had a 35db mic setting but that's a minor gripe considering how well it does overall with audio.
