Recording Live bands? High end audio? Comments?

Hello everyone. I have recorded quite a few live bands over the past year and have tried many different ways of audio capture.

I have captured using stereo pair mics with pre-amp, & compr. with good results.
I have also used my on camera mic.(not great considering it is mono and spl's sometimes become an issue)
There is also the (FOH board feed) most of the time horrible based on audio engineer technique(riding the faders).
But by far the best, recording with direct outs on a good board(soundcraft, crest, midas etc.) then editing in protools hd, mastering and importing into timeline.

Unfortunately I don't always have the opportunity to carry around 16 channels of hard-disk recording to later master with pro- tools. this leads me to the QUESTION.

What type(s) of stereo pair or mic(s) have any of you used with pre-amp/compr. setups with possibly a field recorder or laptop to record high end "live recording setup? I have tried various but am not always happy with results.

Again it is based on having a good PA system and engineer at the help to capture something good as well.

I usually use a set of U87's in a stereo array (X/Y)... Set up high on some booms. Not something you'd want to try in a rough dive or club though.

Kd,
I am primarily an audio guy ( have a studio and do a lot of live recording) Obviously, taking an isolated split to a recording rig is the best way, but you could also try a matrix mix off the FOH, or Monitor console... Unfortunately the time needed to dial that in makes it tough for the Vid guys to get any help from the audio guys...
as far as just taking a stereo room "live" from the FOH, just try and get at mix position and use decent mics. 87's, 414's, lots of different things out there.
Look into http://mhlabs.com/metric_halo/ for an easy and high quality recording rig (8 ch). remember to set up some audience perspective mics as well.
there is a community of kick ass Recording engineers at : http://gearslutz.com/board/index.php3 check into "remote possibilities" and post a question- you'll get help from the best of the best.

I have recorded live bands and experienced drop out in the mid range. The bass, drums, and vocals, come through but the guitars are washed out. Any suggestions there? Thanks!
