recording from 2 external mics into the Zoom H4n

Hello all,

I'm new to the Zoom H4n, and didn't really learn much from the manual.

I was wondering if I would use Stereo mode or 4channel mode to record a lav on input 1 and a shotgun mic on input 2, keeping them separate so I can set their recording levels individually? It would be even more ideal if I could do this, as well as record from the internal microphones.

Thanks!

4 channel would include the two built-in mics on top of the recorder. Do you want that?

Maybe this video (or related ones) will provide some insight.

"Stereo" here simply means two channels. You said you have two microphones, and "stereo" provides a channel for each microphone. Not clear why you would want to use the 4-channel mode for only two channels?

If you are recording two different things on the two channels, don't select a recording mode that combines sounds (like some of the compressed/MP3 modes). Always record production sound in simple, straightforward WAV format.
