Recording directly to computer

I read not to use a firewire cord longer than 15' when recording directly to the computer. How come 15'?

Thx!

Because the IEEE1394 specification for firewire has a maximum cable length of 4.5 meters, which is about 15'. Any longer than that, and it's out of specification.

That said, I've used a 30' cable successfully many times, so it's not like there's a guaranteed failure gonna happen if you use longer than 15', but you are putting yourself outside of the formal specification when you go longer than 15'.
