Something I have been wondering about. How do film crews film dialogues in wide shots? A boom mike would be too far from the subjects, so are they using some kind of clip on mike? If someone could shed some light on this, I would be very happy
Some mics work well even from a distance (and also consider "plant mics" which are hidden behind objects and can work great once you consider how little the camera actually sees) but in some cases you simply can't get a mic close enough. So then you use wireless mics (basically a very small microphone called a lavaliere hidden on an actors body, run to a belt back that's also hidden). Sennheiser G3 is generally considered the bottom end for professional wireless, and Lectrosonics gear is what you'll generally see on Hollywood sets.
And as you might imagine, a wired boom mic is preferable over wireless.
